Jurgen Klopp today announced that he will be leaving Borussia Dortmund at the end of this season, bringing to an end a seven-year association in which the club won two Bundesliga titles, two German Supercups, one German Cup and reached the 2013 Champions League final.
But the Bundesliga’s loss is likely the Premier League’s gain, and there’ll be a new WAG in town come the start of 2015/16: meet Ulla Klopp, Jurgen’s wife of 10 years.
Here’s what you need to know:
1. Jurgen and Ulla met at a bar in Mainz
Jurgen and Ulla met at a bar in Mainz where Bundesliga side Mainz 05, of whom Klopp was manager, regularly celebrated. Ulla was a waitress and neither held an interest in soccer nor knew who Klopp was, but nevertheless thought he was charming. The couple married in December 2005.
2. She Used to be a Teacher…
Ulla is a trained teacher, with a focus on special education. She previously ran a boarding school in Kenya before focusing on writing children’s books.
3. …And is now a Children’s Author
Ulla has authored two children’s books: Tom and the Magic Football, and Tom and the Magic Football in Africa.
We could tell you that they’re about a boy who finds a ball in the attic which makes anyone who kicks it the perfect player, but we prefer Jurgen Klopp’s description: “It’s like Harry Potter – but it’s about football. There’s no Harry Potter flying on his fucking stick – just football.”
4. She and Klopp Both Have Children From Previous Marriages
Both Ulla and Jurgen were previously married, and each brings a son into the relationship. Jurgen’s son, Marc, played for Borussia Dortmund until he retired in 2012 at the age of just 23 due to persistent knee injuries.
5. She Likes Jurgen’s Hair
Okay, so we’re making some assumptions on this one. But considering Klopp had a hair transplant at the Villnow Clinic in London back in 2012, we have to assume his wife approves.
The man himself certainly likes the results: “Yes, it’s true. I underwent a hair transplant. I think the results are really cool, don’t you?”
