A Canadian team has not hoisted the Stanley Cup since 1993 – when the Montreal Canadiens claimed the title – and there are already a number of NHL props available at sportsbooks monitored by OddsShark.com on hockey teams from Canada for next season as bettors await this year’s championship matchup.
The Canadiens bowed out of the 2015 playoffs in the second round against the Tampa Bay Lightning, who won the best-of-seven series in six games to advance to the Eastern Conference final.
Last year, Montreal lost to the New York Rangers in the conference championship round, and the team’s future success hinges upon whether or not key players are retained and added to the current roster.
One of those players the Canadiens hope to retain is defenseman Jeff Petry, who was acquired from the Edmonton Oilers late in the season. Petry is +150 (bet $100 to win $150) to be re-signed by Montreal and -200 (bet $200 to win $100) to ink a deal elsewhere this offseason.
As well, the Canadiens are -300 to make the playoffs in 2016 and +200 to miss the postseason for the first time since 2012.
The Toronto Maple Leafs are another Canadian team under the microscope, especially after missing the playoffs in nine of the past 10 years. The Maple Leafs will have a new head coach next season in Mike Babcock, who signed the richest deal ever for an NHL coach at $50 million over eight years.
Babcock may or may not bring former Tampa Bay Lightning head coach Guy Boucher aboard as one of his assistants, and bettors can wager YES (+400) or NO (-600) that it will actually happen.
There are also odds on whether or not defenseman Dion Phaneuf will be Toronto’s team captain going into the year. Betting YES that Phaneuf will be the captain is the favorite at -300 while NO is worth +200.
Regardless, the Maple Leafs remain small underdogs to make the postseason in 2016 at +115 while bettors need to lay -155 if they think they will miss the playoffs yet again.
