Todd Pletcher got his introduction to horses at a young age growing up in Texas. He obviously took a liking to them because he hasn’t stop since.

Pletcher has been in the horse business in nearly all capacities for about 40 of his 47 years on this earth.

The owner of Todd A. Pletcher Racing Stables, Inc. has trained some of the top horses of the past decade and is looking to get a win in Saturday’s Kentucky Derby, the first leg of the 2015 Triple Crown.

1. Pletcher Has 3 Horses in the 2015 Kentucky Derby

Pletcher has 3 horses in the 2015 Kentucky Derby: Carpe Diem, Materiality and Itsaknockout.

Carpe Diem has been given the best odds of the three at 17/2.

Materiality is at 16/1 and Itsaknockout 33/1.

2. He Has 3 Triple Crown Wins

Pletcher’s Super Saver won the 2010 Kentucky Derby, which was his second victory in a Triple Crown race.

It was the first time in 24 career horse entries that Pletcher won the Run for the Roses.

He also has 2 Belmont Stakes wins: 2007 with filly Rags to Riches and 2013 with Palace Malice.

A Pletcher-trained horse has yet to claim victory in the Preakness Stakes.

3. Pletcher Has 6 Eclipse Awards

Pletcher certainly has had a decorated career, claiming 6 Eclipse Awards as Top Trainer in 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2010 and last year.

He also led trainers in purse earnings from 2004-06.

Pletcher has 23 New York State Training titles, including 5 straight (2002-06) at Saratoga Race Track.

He was also honored with the Woody Stephens Award as Outstanding Trainer in 1998, 2002, 2005 and 2006 by the New York Turf Writers Association.

4. He Began His Career at Age 7

Pletcher’s success should come as no surprise as he’s been around horses his entire life. Literally.

He began as a hot walker at age 7 for his father Jake in Texas.

As a teen, Pletcher would go to California, where he worked as a hot walker for Henry Moreno at Hollywood Park and Del Mar Racetracks.

A hot walker is a person who walks the hot, sweaty horses after a workout.

5. Pletcher Is Married With 3 Children

Pletcher is married to wife Tracy and the couple has 3 children. They live on Long Island in New York.

He graduated from the University of Arizona with a Bachelor of Animal Science in May 1989. Pletcher went right to New York to begin working as a groomer for trainer D. Wayne Lukas.
