The Conn Smythe Trophy is one of the National Hockey League’s year-end awards and is annually given to the Most Valuable Player of the Stanley Cup Playoffs. The award is voted on at the end of the Stanley Cup Playoffs by the Professional Hockey Writers’ Association.

The 1st Conn Smythe Trophy was given out after the 1964-65 season concluded; Montreal Canadiens great and Hall of Famer Jean Beliveau was the first recipient of the award. The most recent Conn Smythe Trophy recipient was Los Angeles Kings’ winger Justin Williams who is also a three-time Stanley Cup champion 2006, 2012 and 2014).

— Five players in NHL history have won the Conn Smythe Trophy and were on the losing team in the Stanley Cup Final: Roger Crozer (1965-66, Detroit Red Wings), Glenn Hall (1967-68, St. Louis Blues), Reggie Leach (1975-76, Philadelphia Flyers), Ron Hextall (1986-87, Philadelphia Flyers), Jean Sebastian-Giguere (2002-03, Mighty Ducks of Anaheim)

— The only players to win more than one Conn Smythe Trophy in their careers are: Wayne Gretzky, Mario Lemieux, Bobby Orr and Bernie Parent who each have won the Award twice. Goalie Patrick Roy has won the Conn Smythe Trophy three times, the most in NHL history.

— Due to the 2004-05 NHL Lockout and lost season, there was no Conn Smythe Trophy winner in 2005.
