Chris Petersen may be in store for a rough homecoming.
Returning to Boise State for the first time since he took a job at Washington a year ago, Petersen faces perhaps one of the most difficult coaching jobs of his career with this year’s Huskies team. The quarterback situation is unclear with Jeff Lindquist, who struggled in limited experience last year, competing against freshmen K.J. Carta-Samuels and Jake Browning, explosive playmaker John Ross is out for the year and the defense lost four players to the NFL.
On the other side of the field, Petersen’s old team, which features 20 starters who were recruited by him, will have some new weapons on offense, but it also has a deep, talented defensive line that should cause havoc at home against a shaky UW offensive line, and arguably the best safety prospect in the nation in Darian Thompson.
When Petersen steps out of that locker room onto the blue turf, “it’s really going to be hard for him,” says friend Scott Butterfield. Not only because he’s returning to see the program he brought to national prominence, but because his Washington squad will be an 11-point underdog.
