According to the New York Post‘s Ian Mohr, New York Knicks head coach Derek Fisher and Memphis Grizzlies forward Matt Barnes were involved in a physical altercation over the weekend.
Yahoo! Sports’ Adrian Wojnarowski confirmed the report:
The confrontation reportedly stemmed around Barnes’ ex-wife, Gloria Govan. Here’s everything you need to know about the 45-year-old:
1. She & Fisher Are Reportedly in a Romantic Relationship, Which Caused the Fight
According to the New York Post’s story, Fisher, who filed for divorce from Candace, his wife of 10 years, in March, has been involved in a romantic relationship with Govan for “a few months.” And when Barnes found out that Fisher was at the house that he shared with his estranged wife, he reportedly drove 95 miles to confront his former Los Angeles Lakers teammate.
“Derek was in Gloria’s back yard with about 10 people having a bonfire on Saturday,” said a source cited by the New York Post. “Derek’s separated from his wife and there’s a relationship with [Gloria]. Barnes was in Santa Barbara [at Memphis Grizzlies training camp] and heard that Fisher was in his house. He went crazy. He got in his car and went to the house and went after Fisher.”
According to Yahoo! Sports, Fisher is still deciding whether or not to press charges.
2. She & Barnes Have Known Each Other Since 8th Grade
In an interview with Latina.com back in 2010, Govan talked about the beginning of her relationship with Barnes:
I was in 8th grade when I met him and I remember I had braces and looked a disaster. We didn’t start dating until 2006 when he was playing for the Golden State Warriors and came back to Oakland, my hometown. That’s when we ran into each other again.
The couple eventually married in 2012 but separated in mid-October of 2014. Their divorce isn’t yet final.
“I’m always going to love my ex,” said Barnes in April. “She’s always going to be my homie. She’s the mother of my kids.”
3. She & Barnes Have Twin Boys Together
On November 6, 2008, Govan gave birth to twin boys, Carter Kelly Barnes and Isaiah Michael Barnes.
In April, she expressed displeasure at Barnes’ long list of fines from the NBA, which were taking away from money that was supposed to go to their kids.
4. She Is a Former Star of “Basketball Wives” & “Baketball Wives LA”
Govan was a main cast member on “Basketball Wives” when it debuted in 2010. She spent two seasons on the show before joining “Basketball Wives LA” in 2011 and 2012.
She also has a few acting credits to her name, including “Chocolate City” and “More Money, More Family” in 2015.
5. Barnes Has Criticized Her For Seeking Attention
Shortly after the two separated, Barnes didn’t hold back in his words towards Govan.
“Um, very difficult,” he said when asked how tough it was to concentrate on the NBA while dealing with a breakup. “You know, especially when your ex is an attention seeker.”
