Drew Brees is back for the New Orleans Saints, which will have some sway in the outcome of the Sunday Night Football betting matchup against the Dallas Cowboys.
At this stage of his career, the 36-year-old Brees is a hit-or-miss proposition for the Saints, who are listed as 3-point favorites against Dallas at sportsbooks monitored by OddsShark.com. The Saints are 0-3 SU and 1-2 ATS this season and are also looking to break a streak of being 0-6 SU and 0-6 ATS in their last six games at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome.
Brees, who sat out Week 3 with a shoulder injury, might have an advantageous matchup against a suspect Cowboys pass rush. Dallas has only three sacks in as many games and DE Randy Gregory is out with an ankle injury. The Saints have yet to show a scary downfield threat while relying on WR Brandin Cooks as a nominal No. 1 receiver. Feature back Mark Ingram is also struggling to deliver impact plays.
While Dallas is minus big names such as Romo, Bryant and DE Greg Hardy (who will return from suspension for a Week 5 game versus New England), is still has a premier offensive line anchored by C Travis Frederick, RG Zack Martin and LT Tyron Smith. The young Saints defense is yielding more than five yards per rush, although it will have more depth for this game due to the return of FS Jarius Byrd and CB Keenan Lewis.
The Cowboys are capable of controlling the clock if they can combine their running game with the controlled passing game of QB Brandon Weeden, who found RB Lance Dunbar 10 times for 100 yards in the 39-28 Week 3 home loss to the unbeaten Atlanta Falcons. That takes some pressure off a thin Dallas defense.
The total for Sunday night’s Dallas vs. New Orleans betting matchup is set at 47 points at the sportsbooks. The total has gone OVER in five of the teams’ six most recent matchups. The total has gone OVER in seven of the Cowboys’ last nine road games
