Sunderland winger Adam Johnson will stand trial on two charges of having sex with an underage girl. The England player appeared at Bradford Crown Court on February 10 along with his girlfriend, Stacey Flounders. He pleaded guilty to two charges, one of grooming and one of kissing an underage girl in a sexual manner. Johnson then denied the counts of having sex with a minor, so a trial will ensue.
He was joined in the courtroom by his long-term girlfriend Stacey Flounders. At the time of his initial arrest in March 2015, she had just given birth to the couple's first child. On January 24, she posted pictures of a newborn baby girl to Facebook, with her friends leaving comments of congratulations. Back in November 2014, she posted pics of a baby shower which showed her to be pregnant. The couple's baby daughter, Ayla, is two months old.
The BBC reports that Judge Jonathan Rose told Johnson's jury that, "You may see reference to this in the press but it's the evidence in court that you will gather. This defendant has already pleaded guilty to two offences, you will hear more about them in detail when Miss Blackwell opens the case to you on Friday. It will be for you and only you to determine if he is guilty or not guilty." Johnson met the girl online in December 2014 and allegedly had sex with her in January 2015. Their correspondence ended in February 2015.
