In the aftermath of Tyler Summitt’s resignation as the women’s basketball coach at Louisiana Tech amid speculation he impregnated one of his players, one of them took to social media to dispel rumors she is not pregnant.
Ashley Santos posted a photo on Twitter showing off her toned midriff to let everyone know she is not the person at the center of the rumors.
Santos, a guard who transferred to Louisiana Tech from Marquette when Summitt was hired away, was being “bombarded” with calls and messages since the news of Summitt’s abrupt resignation broke late Thursday evening.
Here’s what you need to know about Santos and the situation:
1. Santos Posted a Photo on Twitter to Show She Isn’t Pregnant
Tyler Summitt, son of legendary Tennessee women’s basketball coach, stepped down as the head coach of Louisiana Tech and admitted to an inappropriate relationship outside of his marriage.
Unconfirmed rumors and speculation swirled on social media and websites that Summitt had impregnated a player.
Ashley Santos, a 5-foot-11 guard for the Lady Techsters, took to Twitter to let everyone know she isn’t pregnant.
2. She Started 28 Games In 2015-16
Santos stared 28 games for LA Tech in 2015-16, missing two with an injury.
She averaged 9.6 points and 4.8 rebounds per game. She had 52 offensive rebounds to lead the team.
Santos’ season high in points was 19.
3. Santos Transferred to Louisiana Tech From Marquette With Coach Tyler Summitt
Santos, a native of Geneva, Illinois, began her college basketball career at Marquette.
Tyler Summitt was an assistant coach with the Golden Eagles when Santos played there.
She played for the team in 2013-14 before a standout career at Geneva High School.
Santos was named a McDonald’s All-American her senior year and also played for Puerto Rico’s national team.
4. She Is Friends With Brooke Pumroy, Another Player Who Is Subject of Rumors of Having an Affair With Summitt
Another name at the center of the pregnancy rumors is Brooke Pumroy, who played at Marquette with Santos.
The two transferred prior to Louisiana Tech prior to the 2014-15 season, the year Summitt, the former Marquette assistant, took over as the Lady Techsters head coach. Both Santos and Pumroy had to sit out last year due to NCAA transfer rules.
Santos told latechsports.com when she transferred:
I am extremely excited to be a part of Coach Summitt’s vision for the women’s basketball program, as well as establishing myself as a student at Louisiana Tech. I believe this is the perfect place to be, and it is an even greater blessing to start this new adventure with Brooklyn and my new teammates. … I have no doubt that I can provide hard work and contribute constant effort to the program, and I am looking forward to being a part of the Lady Techster family. I am very familiar with the tradition and history of Louisiana Tech women’s basketball program and am motivated to have history repeat itself.
Pumroy’s name surfaced late Thursday evening on social media and websites. She has been at the center of rumors and speculation as the player who former coach Summitt had a relationship with.
5. Santos’ Parents Said Ashley Had No Other Choice But to Post the Photo
In a story published by USA Today, Santos’ parents said Ashley had no choice but to post the picture to dispel the rumors because she was being “bombarded” with calls and messages.
Ashley’s father Jose told USA Today:
Ashley’s just an innocent bystander … People were asking if she was pregnant, so she defended herself. That’s all that it is.
Ashley’s mother Lori said her daughter has not been in touch with Pumroy lately:
She hasn’t seen her. She hasn’t spoken to her. Nothing.
Jose Santos said some of the Louisiana Tech players felt Summitt favored Pumroy and it divided the team months before the coach resigned. He told USA Today Sports in another story that Ashley went to the LA Tech assistant coaches, but nothing was ever done.
She presented to the coaches that some of the girls had confided in her that if things didn’t start to change, or some things weren’t addressed, they were not returning. They didn’t like the environment at all and they talked about leaving and that’s a fact. … I know for sure that Ashley was told there would be adjustments made and it never happened.
