The spotlight was not always this big for Carson Wentz and Melissa Uhrich. The couple started dating in high school and went on to attend small colleges. Wentz was the quarterback for North Dakota State, an FCS school, that aside from a couple appearances on ESPN College Gameday is off the college football radar.

In the months leading up to the draft, Wentz began climbing up draft boards. Amidst the increasing demands of his football career, Wentz spends time with his girlfriend, Melissa, and his golden retriever, Henley, to recharge. Aside from attending his pro day, Uhrich has remained out of the spotlight as she finishes school at Concordia College.

As Wentz moves on to the NFL, it will be increasingly hard to stay out of the limelight. The couple has been able to adjust to a multitude of changes since high school and the NFL is just the next step in the process for them.

Here’s more about the couple.

1. She Had to Take Carson’s Phone Away to Stop Him From Watching Film

Wentz love of football has been well documented. He is always trying to improve his game. So much so, that it has even interfered with date night.

According to ESPN, Uhrich had to take away his phone on date nights. The reason? She caught him watching game film under the dinner table. North Dakota State offensive coordinator Tim Polasek spoke to CBS Sports about Wentz insane work ethic and dedication to spending time with his girlfriend.

“I told the NFL scouts, if you ask him to work 60 hours, he’s going to work 80 hours. In that off time, he’s going to be with his two companions — his dog and he’s got a significant other,” Polasek told CBS Sports.

2. Melissa Ran Cross Country at Concordia College

It is no surprise Wentz would date someone that also loves sports. Uhrich was a cross country runner at Concordia College located in Moorhead, Minnesota. She also played basketball, volleyball and ran track in high school.

According to her Concordia Athletics profile, her passion for sports even crosses over to the movies she likes. Her favorite movie is Coach Carter. She was named to the All-State and All-Conference team in high school.

3. She Tore Her ACL Two Times

Neither Wentz nor Uhrich are strangers to rehab. Uhrich tore her ACL playing basketball in high school. Doctors reconstructed a ligament that was taken from her hip. According to Concordia College, Uhrich recovered from the injury but ran into another obstacle when she was diagnosed with iron-deficiency anemia. Uhrich was able to take iron pills and medication to help recover.

Unfortunately, she tore her ACL a second time in a steeplechase race as she was hurdling a barrier but ended up finishing the race. After eight months of rehab, she was able to return to cross country running.

Wentz no doubt received guidance from his girlfriend after he broke his wrist in the middle of last season. He was able to rehab and heal in time to play in the FCS championship game.

4. Melissa & Carson Are High School Sweethearts

According to ESPN, the couple has been together since high school. The spotlight has not always been on the two. Wentz was not highly recruited and took an nontraditional path to the NFL.

He went to FCS school North Dakota State while Melissa attended Concordia College. The schools are just a ten minute drive from each other. Their next stop will be a much bigger city as Wentz becomes the centerpiece of an NFL franchise.

5. The Couple Is Outspoken About Their Faith

Uhrich and Wentz speak often of their faith. Although Melissa plans to move with Wentz to his new city, the couple plans to live separately until they get married. Wentz cited religious reasons for the decision when he spoke with ESPN.

“That’s really important to both of us, and to both our families,” Wentz told ESPN. Uhrich has cited her faith as a big reason she was able to overcome multiple injuries and setbacks to her athletic career.
