They met in last year’s finals, they met in the group stage, and now Argentina and Chile will once again meet. Copa America Centenario has brought us the two best teams in the tournament, and the stakes are high for Sunday’s final at MetLife Stadium.
Chile won their first-ever Copa America title in 2015, and the champions can repeat with one more victory. They’ve done it with a suffocating press defense and an opportunistic offense, one that has converted chances given by their opponents. La Roja will get Arturo Vidal back for the final, after a yellow card suspension kept him on the sidelines for the team’s rain-soaked semifinal win over Colombia.
For Argentina, it would be the first major trophy for Messi and the country in 23 years. They finished second at the World Cup, second at Copa America 2015, but they have all along looked like the top team this summer. La Albiceleste don’t enter the match without injury concerns. Ezequiel Lavezzi is out after breaking his elbow falling over a boundary, and Angel Di Maria is still likely to sit out with a muscle injury.
