WWE World Heavyweight Champion Dean Ambrose is dating Renee Young, a sports broadcaster who currently works with the WWE and who has her own show on the company’s network.
30-year-old Renee Young, who was born on September 19, 1985 and whose real name is Renee Paquette, has a background in sports broadcasting and is the host of WWE’s Unfiltered. She and Ambrose went public with their relationship in March of 2015, and Ambrose is scheduled to appear on Unfiltered during July 6th’s episode. Young will also be a regular cast member in the upcoming season of Total Divas.
Here’s everything you need to know about Renee Young.
1. She Originally Pursued a Career in Comedy
Although she now makes her living as an interviewer and commentator, Young originally wanted to pursue a career in improv comedy. She moved to Los Angeles at the age of 19, hoping to find work as a comedic actress. This passion for comedy went back to when she was a child, as she was always sort of the class clown, she told the Miami Herald.
“Growing up watching Kids in the Hall, SCTV, SNL…watching all that stuff really was a big part of my childhood,” she said. “Right after high school I went and did Second City, did all the comedy stuff there, and then got into doing some method acting. Sitting around in Canada waiting to be Girl #3 at the bar wasn’t really working out for me, so I was like ‘you know what, I’m going to go be a TV host.'”
She moved back to Toronto from Los Angeles, and she was soon hired at The Score Television Network, a sports news channel in Canada. She became the host of Right After Wrestling, which was later retitled Aftermath, and it was this position that allowed her to transition into the WWE years later.
2. She Came Up With the Idea of ‘Unfiltered’
Renee Young is now the host of Unfiltered, an interview/entertainment show available on the WWE Network. This wasn’t a show created by the company that Young was hired to do, though; the entire thing was her idea.
“So the idea of ‘Unfiltered’ is something that happened on its own. Let me sit down with some superstars and interview them and hang out and get them out of their shells a little bit,” she told the Miami Herald.”I think that’s been the cool part for fans of the WWE Universe to see their favorite superstars eating breakfast, hanging out. I think that’s a cool aspect for other people to want to see.”
Young said that she was inspired by watching other interview shows, and she particularly drew inspiration from Chelsea Handler. Young says that she watched Handler’s E! show and thought, “That’s what I want to do.”
3. She Didn’t Know Much About Wrestling When She Started
These days, Young is an expert in everything WWE, but she says that this wasn’t exactly the case when she first started hosting Right After Wrestling. She went to the Score Television Network because she was attracted to some of its comedic interviews and didn’t know too much about sports.
Young explained, “They asked me to do a wrestling show within a couple of months of me being there, and I was like ‘Yes, yes I can do that. Let me just do a little Google search here. Great!'”
She recalled that her very first interview was to be with John Cena, and she had to do hours of research beforehand to know what she was talking about. Young says her questions were incredibly stupid but that she thought they were hilarious at the time; they were so bad that the WWE ended up canceling the interview as soon as they heard her questions.
“Now they pay me to ask questions,” she said. “Joke’s on you guys!”
4. She Went to a Few Wrestling Events as a Kid
Although she wasn’t overly familiar with modern wrestling when she joined Score, that isn’t to say she had no prior history with the WWE. She was actually into wrestling as a kid; her dad was a concert promoter, and so he frequently brought Young backstage at WWE events to meet the performers.
“He was working at the Skydome in Toronto…and brought me backstage, and I got to meet The Rock and Stone Cold and Chyna and Mick Foley,” she said.
She told Gorilla Position that there are pictures floating around somewhere of a 12-year-old Renee Young wearing an oversized winter coat and hanging out with The Rock.
5. She Says Ambrose Is a Lot Different Than Fans Would Think
Even though he’s on TV for several hours every week, Dean Ambrose is a bit of an enigma. He has no social media presence and rarely does interviews out of character, so fans really only know him for his over-the-top wrestling persona. Young says that unlike the Lunatic Fringe character, her boyfriend is a lovely person and much different than viewers might expect.
“I can’t give away too much because we are very private about our relationship,” she said. “But he’s very nice, and he’s adorable. People wouldn’t assume that. He’s definitely a lot different than people would know.”
As she mentioned, they are quite private about their relationship, and virtually no photos exist of them embracing as a couple.
“I wouldn’t be with anything less than the optimal, most beautiful, most tremendous girl in the world,” Ambrose said of Young. “She’s far too good for me.”
