Shane Lowry had to teach himself how to play golf, but he came from a family that knew how to win. His father played Gaelic football and Lowry boasts that “Irish sporting culture” is in his blood.
The Irish golfer is on the cusp of winning his first U.S. Open. If he wins, he will celebrate with his new wife, Wendy, plus his father, mother and brother, Alan.
Here’s what you need to know about the Lowry family.
1. Lowry’s Father Won an All Ireland Medal in Gaelic Football.
Lowry’s father Brendan played Gaelic football for the local club Ferbane. He also was a member of the Offaly senior inter-county team from 1981 to 1992. His brothers Mick and Sean also played and all three were part of the 1982 All-Ireland championship team.
Brendan served as his son’s caddy during the Par 3 contest held prior to the 2015 Masters. He currently works as a post office worker.
2. He and His Wife Eloped with Their Family’s Blessing.
When planning a wedding became too much stress for Lowry and his wife-to-be Wendy Honner, they decided to cancel the big white wedding at home and elope. The couple exchanged their vows during an intimate ceremony in New York after reading about another Irish couple who decided to elope.
The 29-year-old golfer told the Irish radio state 2fm (via Irish Mirror):
The guest list [was spiralling] and I get stressed very easily. So we decided the big white wedding at home was not what we wanted. We cancelled plans a few months ago and told both our families, and as long as they were pretty happy, we were happy to go ahead.
3. His Brother Alan Lowry Is Following in His Footsteps.
Lowry is a self-taught golfer and game to the game later than most at age 12. His younger brother Alan has followed his lead and currently competes on the Irish amateur circuit. In 2015, Alan won the Mullingar Scratch Cup, seven years after his big brother won the competition.
The two brothers also have an older sister, Sinead. She and her husband Niall gave birth to their first child, Cian Flanagan, in September 2014. Shane posts many photos of him and his nephew on Instagram.
4. Lowry’s Parents Home was Ransacked.
The Lowry family became the victims of fame when burglars ransacked their home in Clara, Offaly, Ireland in 2012. They made away with Brendan’s 1982 Sam Maguire Cup and a number of trophies won by Shane at the Esker Hills Golf Club as well as awards won by Alan, according to Golf, by Tour Miss.
The burglars did not get Shane’s Irish Open trophy. He was disappointed for his mother, who he said “prided herself so much with the appearance of the house.” He also took to Twitter (via Golf, by Tour Miss) to shame the culprits.
Just so pissed off to hear the news of my parent’s house being ransacked last night. They’re really are some horrible scumbags in the world.
5. Lowry’s Family Partied All Night When He Won His First PGA Tour Event
Shane’s hometown Esker Golf Club had planned a celebrated for his brother Alan’s win at the Mullingar Scratch Cup, but the party expanded when Shane won his first PGA Tour event — the WGC-Bridgestone International in Ohio, according to Irish Mirror. Nearly 300 supporters celebrated their hometown hero’s win, who became the world’s number 19 golfer with the win.
The club captain John Boland told Irish Mirror:
The Lowry family are terrific. This is where Shane honed his skills and where his star quality was spotted. This is great for the people of Offaly and gives the whole place a lift.
