After the United States men's basketball team went through a rough period during the early-2000's, the decision was made in 2005 to hire Jerry Colangelo as the program's managing director. One of Colangelo's first moves was the bring on Duke head coach Mike Krzyzewski to serve as head coach, and since then USA Basketball has both returned to prominence and strengthened its position as the most powerful program in the world. Monday morning USA Basketball officially announced the roster for the 2016 Summer Olympic Team, which will look to win a third consecutive Olympic gold medal in Rio de Janeiro.
Included on the team are two players who won gold at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, and five who won gold at the 2014 FIBA Basketball World Cup. Seven of the players on the roster were named to All-NBA teams this past season, and nine were NBA All-Star selections. Serving as assistants on Krzyzewski's staff are Syracuse head coach Jim Boeheim, Minnesota Timberwolves president of basketball operations/head coach Tom Thibodeau and former Oklahoma City Thunder assistant coach Monty Williams.
