Less than ten minutes into the second half of USA’s Copa America quarterfinal against Ecuador, Antonio Valencia started a sideline scuffle after tripping USA midfielder Alejandro Bedoya.
Valencia was shown his red, but at first the red appeared to only show the cards to Jones. It was at first unclear why Jones was ejected, but the video shows him clearly taking a swing at an Ecuador player. While the attempt didn’t exactly connect, it’s easy to see how a referee might catch a glimpse of the swing and show cards.
Both players are important to their teams, but USA don’t have the depth of Ecuador. Jones had been solid in the first 50 minutes, and set up Clint Dempsey to score the game’s first goal.
USA won the match 2-1 and advance to their first Copa America semifinal since 1995.
