USA Swimming Olympic Trials Results: Day 3

USA swimmers booked spots in Rio in the following four events on Tuesday night:

Men’s 200m Free

Townley Haas captured the victory in the 200m freestyle final, edging out Conor Dwyer and Jack Conger in a photo finish:

Ryan Lochte faded in the final 25 meters but was still able to book a spot in his fourth Olympics, as the top four in this event qualify.

Women’s 100m Back

We have a new pair of first-time Olympians, as 21-year-old Olivia Smoliga took the victory, followed by 19-year-old Kathleen Baker.

2012 Olympic gold medalist Missy Franklin fell to seventh, while Natalie Coughlin finished eighth.

Men’s 100m Back

After barely missing Olympic bids in 2012, Ryan Murphy and David Plummer each got redemption on Tuesday night, finishing 1-2 in the 100m backstroke to book their tickets to Rio.

For the second event in a row, the defending Olympic gold medalist failed to qualify, with Matt Grevers finishing third.

Women’s 100m Breast

Favorite Lilly King exploded past the rest of the field, recording the fastest time in the world in two years (1:05.20) to secure her first Olympic bid. The 19-year-old was followed by Katie Meili.

Per “As of now, only the first-place finisher in each event, along with the top four swimmers in the 100m and 200m free, will be officially added to the Olympic roster. The second-place finishers, and the fifth and sixth-place finishers in the 100m and 200m free, will likely be added later in the week, pending swimmers qualifying in multiple events.”
