When April Ross, 34, hits the beach at the 2016 Summer Olympic Games in Rio, her teammate will be Kerri Walsh Jennings, not Jennifer Kessy. Ross is replacing Walsh Jennings' previous Olympic teammate, Misty May Treanor, who retired after the London games. Walsh Jennings and May-Treanor beat Kessy and Ross in the London final.
Like her teammate, Ross was born in California. She's from Costa Mesa and was a star player at Newport Harbor High School, where she played indoor volleyball. She went on to attend the University of Southern California. In her last two years in college, USC won back-to-back NCAA championships.
In July, Ross posed nude for ESPN The Magazine's body issue. In that interview, she said she doesn't isn't trying to replace May-Treanor. "We created a new team; it's not Misty and Kerri's team that I'm subbing into. Kerri and I are a new team and we're going to have different ups and different downs than they did," she said.
