In a brutal accident, French Olympian gymnast Samir Ait Said, 26, broke his left leg after a bad landing off of a vault on Saturday. After the crash landing, the athlete rolled onto his back as his left leg hung at a horrifying angle.

Ait Said was carried away from the arena on a stretcher as fans gave him a standing ovation, NBC Olympics reported. He is a four-time European championships medalist on rings, and received gold in 2013.

An audible snap could be heard in the stands, according to the Washington Post.

Adding insult to injury, Ait Said was then dropped off a stretcher by paramedics as they attempted to load him onto an ambulance:

International Gymnast Magazine posted to Facebook after the injury occurred:

Samir Ait Said’s horrific injury reminds us of how dangerous gymnastics can be. Men’s vault has increased in difficulty more than any other event, and gymnasts are taking extreme risks for a few extra tenths in D score. When you are landing after flipping 2 1/2 times through the air, that mat is still a hard landing… Get well soon Samir

NBC Olympics reported the damages as an open fracture to the left tibia of Ait Said’s leg, and said the Olympics are likely over for the gymnast.
