Thanks to his relationship with Casey Shomaker, swimming star Joseph Schooling was already winner before he defeated Michael Phelps. Just like her beau, she’s a student at the University of Texas where she is studying for her doctorate in law. Shomaker was a star athlete and on the national honor roll during her high school years in College Station, Texas.
On August 12, the Singaporean swimmer Joseph Schooling shocked the world by beating Michael Phelps in the 100 meters butterfly final at the Rio Olympics.

1. She Chose to Study at the University of Texas ‘Solely for the Breakfast Tacos’
On her Twitter profile, Shomaker demonstrates her sense of humor in the bio section writing, “I came back to Austin solely for the breakfast tacos.” According to her LinkedIn page, is working as a legal intern for USAA where she assists “attorneys in providing legal services like negotiation, drafting, and document creation.”
Shomaker is studying for a doctorate in law at the University of Texas in Austin where she also got her bachelor’s degree in biochemistry. In 2015 until 2016, Shomaker studied law at Boston University. She is a member of the Chi Omega Sorority. She is also involved in the Young Life Christian Ministry. On July 14, Shomaker tweeted, “I’m starting the 18th grade this year and still get excited about shopping for school supplies!”
Like her boyfriend, Shomaker is no stranger to the swimming pool. The Daily Texan featured her as part of a feature about lifeguards at the University of Texas. She mentions in the piece that she never had to save anyone but that the lifeguards were most concerned about the diving board at the school saying, “Off the 10-meter, smacking is equivalent to hitting concrete.”
2. Her Boyfriend Before Schooling Was Also a Swimming Star at the University of Texas
Previously, Shomaker dated a University of Texas star swimmer Wyatt Collins, according to her Facebook page. The couple were dating as of 2014. Collins won a NCAA swimming and diving trophy in April 2016. Collins is a history major.
On Valentine’s Day, Collins tweeted, “High Fidelity should be the official movie of Singles Awareness Day.”
3. She Won a Bronze Medal at the 2010 Junior Olympics in Volleyball
In 2011, Shomaker was named as a Class Room Champion, a high school award. You can watch her receive the award in the above video. Her teachers speak about Shomaker’s leadership abilities as school volleyball captain and her stellar academic reputation. During a short interview, Shomaker credits balancing of time as the secret to burning the candle at both ends. According to her Hudl page, Shomaker graduated from A&M Consolidated High School in 2012.

4. Her Mother Is a Senior Vice President at Auburn University
Shomaker’s mother, Kelli, was formerly the senior vice president for finance and administrative services at Blinn College. That school is Cam Newton alma-mater. According to a post on Shomaker’s Instagram page, her mother has recently been appointed to the same role at Auburn University.
5. The Internet Is Aghast That Phelps & Schooling Met Each Other When the Singaporean Was a Teen
Schooling, who also pipped Phelps in the butterfly semi-final, is clearly a long time Phelps fan. After the final, a photo circulated online showing a teenage Schooling and a fully-grown Phelps.
