Eyebrows were raised this summer when WWE superstars Paige and Alberto Del Rio were assigned to different shows, even though they are a couple in real life. A new rumor now suggests that the management intentionally split them up and wanted to end their relationship.
Wrestlezone reports that on a new episode of the MSL & Sullivan podcast, wrestler and commentator Mister Saint Laurent said that both Paige and Alberto Del Rio were approached about their romance by the WWE.
“Mark Carrano, who fans might know from Total Divas, kind of like the office liaison guy, approached Del Rio and Paige individually and harassed each of them about their relationship,” Mister Saint Luarent said. “It was indicated that the office wanted them to sever their romantic relationship.”
He also said that this is absolutely the reason that Paige was assigned to Monday Night Raw and Alberto Del Rio was assigned to SmackDown.
“A lot of people speculated if this was the reason [WWE] split them up in the draft and that’s definitely what happened,” Mister Saint Luarent said. “The company did not want them together. They split them up in the draft by design and they threatened to fire Paige if she didn’t break up with Del Rio.”
Rumors began to surface immediately after the 2016 draft that Paige and Alberto Del Rio were very upset about the WWE’s decision. In the days that followed, it was unclear whether the couple might be breaking up, as Paige deleted all photos of Del Rio from her Instagram page. She later posted a picture of herself with Del Rio with the caption, “I miss you Papi and I need you in my life..”
At the moment, both superstars’ place in the WWE is unclear. Alberto Del Rio is reportedly finished with the company and will be officially leaving this month, not returning from his current suspension. Paige, meanwhile, is also on a 30-day suspension due to her violation of the wellness policy, but she is unlikely to leave anytime soon due to the fact that her contract extends into 2019. She has, however, been suffering from a back and neck injury, the severity of which has not yet been made clear to the public but could potentially affect her wrestling career.
