Chase Elliott didn’t need to win his Can-Am Duel on Thursday night–he already secured the pole in the Daytona 500–but he was out to to make a statement.

The 21-year-old did exactly that, winning the night’s first Duel in impressive fashion to secure 10 championship points and put himself in some impressive historical company:

Fellow Hendrick Motorsports driver Dale Earnhardt Jr., looking to win the 60-lap race for the third year in a row, led for most of the second Duel but was surpassed late by last year’s Daytona 500 winner Denny Hamlin, who secured the victory and will start on the outside of the second row in Sunday’s Great American Race.
