Justin Jackson and Luke Kennard may be the game’s leading scorers and the top two candidates for ACC Player of the Year, but a strong case could be made that neither is the most important individual in this particular matchup.
That title might just go to freshman Frank Jackson.
When these teams met a month ago, it was Grayson Allen who proved to be the star, pouring in seven three-pointers and an ACC season-high (for him) 25 points to help the Blue Devils take out Carolina:
Allen, though, is now dealing with an ankle injury that held him out of last week’s Miami game, limited him to just 16 minutes and two points against Florida State and will keep him out of the starting lineup for this one:
Jackson has eased the pain of that injury. He hit three-of-five from deep for 16 points against Miami and knocked down three-of-four treys for 22 points against FSU, playing arguably his two best games of the year at the most crucial time.
If Jackson continues to provide an efficient third scoring punch behind Kennard and Jayson Tatum, the Blue Devils should be able to keep up with Carolina’s No. 4 ranked Ken-Pom offense. But if he struggles, and if Allen continues to be ineffective due to his injury, Duke is going to have a bad time on the road against a UNC defense that has played extremely well over the last month.
Whatever happens, it will assuredly be entertaining. This is UNC-Duke, after all.
