In the midst of a scandal surrounding leaked private photos of Saraya-Jade Bevis, the WWE is still working on a movie about her life.
Fighting With My Family is an upcoming movie about Paige and her wrestler parents, Ricky Knight and Sweet Saraya.
Here’s what you need to know about the Paige movie, its cast, and its current status.
1. It’s Written & Directed by Stephen Merchant
Fighting With My Family is being written directed by Stephen Merchant.
Merchant is known largely for his work with Ricky Gervais; he is the co-creator of the British version of The Office, and he also worked with Gervais on Extras and Life’s Too Short.
This will be the first movie that Merchant writes and directs on his own; he previously co-directed Cemetery Junction in 2010 along with Ricky Gervais.
2. It’s Produced by The Rock
Outside of Stephen Merchant, the big name attached to Fighting With My Family is Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson.
Johnson is producing the film with his production company Seven Bucks Productions. He says he was impressed with the 2012 documentary The Wrestlers: Fighting with My Family and he knew that it would make a great dramatized film.
“Back in 2012, I was in my hotel room in London and stumbled across a documentary on a local UK channel. Not only was I intrigued by this loving and wild family, but I also felt it’s the kind of narrative that would make an amazing movie,” Johnson said when the movie was announced, according to The Hollywood Reporter. “The Knights’ journey is a universal one that all families are familiar with. I relate to Saraya (Paige) and her wrestling family on such a personal level and it means so much that I can help tell their story.”
In addition, Johnson will cameo in the film as himself.
3. It Stars Lena Headey, Nick Frost & Vince Vaughn
Some A-list stars are attached to the movie Fighting With My Family.
Playing the role of Paige’s mother Julia Bevis will be Lena Headey, known for her role as Cersei Lannister on the HBO series Game of Thrones. And playing Paige’s father Patrick Bevis will be Nick Frost, known for his work with Simon Pegg on comedies like Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz, and The World’s End.
Also starring in the movie will be Vince Vaughn as Jake “The Snake” Roberts.
The actress who will be playing Paige, however, is not as well known: Florence Pugh, a British actress who has only appeared in four projects before this. Her first role was in the 2014 movie The Falling, in which she stars alongside Game of Thrones’ Maisie Williams. She also starred in the 2016 movie Lady Macbeth.
Finally, playing AJ Lee in the movie will be Thea Trinidad, a professional wrestler known largely for her work with Total Nonstop Action but who has also worked with the WWE.
4. A Key Scene Was Filmed at a ‘Monday Night Raw’ Taping
Last month, the Fighting With My Family crew filmed a key scene at a Monday Night Raw show.
After the televised broadcast ended, Dwayne Johnson came out into the ring at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, California, explaining to the crowd that the crew was there to film a scene in which Paige faces AJ Lee in a match. The crowd at the Staples Center, then, all took part in the production process.
Dwayne Johnson made headlines that night when he called CM Punk in the ring. Because AJ Lee is married to CM Punk, as soon as Lee’s name was mentioned, the crowd began to chant “CM Punk!” Even though the WWE tends to avoid all mentions of Punk and generally ignores the crowd chanting his name, Johnson took a different approach, calling CM Punk over the phone in the middle of the ring. Unfortunately, Punk did not answer.
5. It Does Not Yet Have a Release Date
Fighting With My Family does not yet have a specific release date, although it’s currently expected to be released sometime in 2018.
The movie will be distributed by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer.
During the scandal involving the explicit photos of Paige that were posted online without her permission, Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter noted that Paige might be somewhat protected here because of Dwayne Johnson and Johnson’s movie Fighting With My Family.
