It looks like we are headed for another old-school Celtics-Lakers rivalry as the two storied franchises landed the top two picks in the 2017 NBA Draft. The luck of the Irish was with the Celtics as Boston landed the top pick in the 2017 NBA Draft. Luck was also kind to the Lakers who will pick number two allowing them to keep their pick. Los Angeles would have sent their selection to the Sixers if it had dropped out of the top three. With Markelle Fultz and Lonzo Ball projected as the top two picks, basketball fans are about to witness the next great NBA point guard rivalry. The Celtics are in the Eastern Conference Finals yet had the best chance to land the top pick thanks to a shrewd trade with the Nets. All eyes are on Ball, thanks in part to his extroverted father. Fultz has had less buzz surrounding him, but is the favorite to be selected with the top pick. All signs point to the two points guards being selected with the top two picks which could re-create the famous Lakers-Celtics rivalry. Ball spoke with ESPN about how he views the comparison with Fultz. "Markelle's a great player, but I feel I'm better than him," Ball told ESPN. "I think I can lead a team better than him. Obviously he's a great scorer -- he's a great player, so I'm not taking that away from him." ESPN's Ramona Shelburne reported Ball has not decided whether he will work out for the Celtics. The family has been adamant about their desire to stay in Los Angeles and could make the decision easy for Boston.
Fate was not as kind to the Suns, Magic and Knicks who all fell lower than their projected odds. The Kings will end up picking fifth and tenth which is just about best-case scenario for Sacramento who was in danger of losing their pick. Things are looking up for the Kings who will get to add two young pieces in a talented draft class. For your thoughts on the draft, reach out to me on Twitter @JonDAdams.
