Johanna Konta is the top-ranked British women’s tennis player in the world and is hoping the 2017 Wimbledon tournament ends with her first grand slam tournament. The 26-year-old could be the first British woman to win since Virginia Wade in 1977. Konta is dating Jackson Wade.
Although Konta represents Great Britain, she was born in Sydney, Australia on May 17, 1991 to Hungarian parents. At 14, she moved to Spain for tennis training and while there, her parents moved to the U.K. She has been a British citizen since May 2012.
“Australia is my birth home so it will always be a home of some sort,” Konta told the Australian Associated Press in January 2016. “But I’m very happy, very pleased to be representing Great Britain. That is my home and that is where my heart is. That is where I grew up essentially. So when people ask me where I’m from, where is home, that’s where it is.”
Here’s what you need to know about Jackson Wade and Konta’s relationships.
1. She’s Been Dating Wade Since She Won the Miami Open
The Daily Mail reports that she has been dating the 24-year-old Wade since her Miami victory.
Konta told the Daily Mail that it felt “really weird” to talk about the relationship in public, adding, “He’s been around since Miami and no one cares.”
2. He Studied Filmmaking at SAE Institute Oxford
Wade is a photographer and commercial filmmaker. According to his LinkedIn page, he studied filmmaking and production at SAE Institute Oxford and graduated in 2014. He learned production, cinematography, camera operation, documentary and commercial filmmaking.
After graduation, he stayed at the institute as Digital Film Making Degree Programme Supervisor.
“The Lead Supervisor is responsible for the leadership of a team of supervisors to ensure the continued operation of the equipment in the SAE Institute labs, suites and studios, monitoring OHS,” his LinkedIn page reads.
“There’s probably never going to be another point in your life when this level of equipment is so readily available for you to use so get in the studios and start learning every single aspect of it, the lecturers encourage this as much as possible and are always around to help,” Wade says in a statement on SAE Institute’s website. “Take advantage of it because the time flies by so quickly and you need to be a pro with a kick ass portfolio by the time you leave.”
3. He’s Now a Videographer for the Lawn Tennis Association
In May 2016, Wade was hired by the Lawn Tennis Association, Britain’s tennis governing body, as a video and photography manager.
“My training has been both via Higher Education (1st Class Digital Film Making Hons Degree) and through my experience within the industry as a freelancer and through my self-start company Erimus Productions, through which I have co-created various music videos, short films, corporate promotional videos and a documentary which has been broadcast internationally on TV stations around the world,” Wade’s LinkedIn bio reads.
4. He Is Co-Owner of 90SecondStory, a Firm That Creates Online Videos for Businesses
Wade is co-owner of 90SecondStory, which is based in Middlesbrough, North Yorkshire. The firm’s website lists it as a “trading name of Erimus Media Ltd.” The firm’s directors are Peter Smithson and Daniel Michael Smith.
90SecondStory creates films for companies and brands throughout the U.K., working with marketing departments and creative agencies.
“Clients appreciate the way they demystify the price of the production process and give them a real unit cost for their video content requirements,” 90SecondStory’s website reads.
Smithson and Smith “have a background in engineering which gives them a rare skill set: the natural flair and creativity of film-makers combined with the methodical and technical approach of engineers,” according to the site.
5. Konta Was Previously Linked to Former Tennis Coach Kether Clouder
In a January 2017 interview with The Sun, Konta referred to Kether Clouder as “the boyfriend.” Clouder is a business development manager at Hawk-Eye Innovations in London and a former tennis coach. He is also Konta’s hitting partner.
“I am not going to tell you his name. You can call him The Boyfriend,” Konta told the Sun when they asked who her boyfriend was. There were Instagram photos of the two together, and they attended the BT Sports Action Woman Awards in late 2015 together.
However, in a June 2016 interview with The Guardian, Konta said this was just a joke. “No, that was a joke,” she said with a laugh.
