After a disappointing draw in their Gold Cup opener, USMNT aim to open up the group standings with a win over Martinique. Because the tiny island is still owned by France, Martinique cannot qualify for the World Cup but can still make some noise in CONCACAF.
Dom Dwyer scored the lone goal for USA against Panama, but it wasn’t enough as the match ended 1-1. Bruce Arena will likely make some changes against Martinique, who defeated Nicaragua 2-0 and currently sit atop Group B.
Martinique have one MLS player on their roster: Seattle Sounders defender Jordy Delem. Most of the squad plays club football in Martinique, but other play in France, England, Belgium, Greece or Israel.
USA came away with a point after the toughest game of their group, but cannot play down to Martinique on Wednesday. The islanders played a wide-open game against Nicaragua, but proper defending from USMNT should keep Martinique in check.
Bruce Arena has told his team that everyone on the roster will play in World Cup, and that will certainly mean changes. The midfield trio of Acosta, McCarty and Joe Corona struggled in the opener, opening the door for Paul Arriola and Cristian Roldan to get their shot.
Kickoff is scheduled for 9:00 p.m. Eastern, and lineups will be posted one hour before kickoff.
