For some, fantasy basketball is here to save you from your fantasy football season. Others are just happy basketball season has arrived.
For as much as we plan our fantasy teams, there is a lot that is unpredictable. One of the few things you can control is your fantasy team name. Having the perfect team name sets the tone for the rest of the season.
Whether you are looking for a name to coincide with your star player, or just want the laughs of your league mates, we have you covered. If you are looking for a specific player that did not make the list, Hashtag Basketball is a great resource which lists team names based on players.
Heavy has scoured the internet, and picked the best fantasy basketball names. Here’s the best fantasy basketball team names for the 2017-18 season.
Gobert or Go Home
There are no shortage of fantasy names involving Jazz big man Rudy Gorbert. This name comes courtesy of Sporting News, and narrowly edged out another favorite, The Gobert Report. Last season, Gobert averaged 14 points, 12.8 rebounds and 2.6 blocks. Gobert can almost single-handedly win you the blocks category each week.
Gobert spent the off-season throwing shade at Gordon Hayward after he left for Boston. Gobert has always been a rebounding and defensive monster. With Hayward no longer in Utah, Gobert may step into more offensive opportunities this season.
Whiteside of the Moon
Pink Floyd fans will appreciate this reference to Dark Side of the Moon that came courtesy of Reddit user xRyuzakii. Whiteside has been a bright light for fantasy owners. During the 2016-17 season, Whiteside averaged 17 points, 14.1 rebounds and 2.1 blocks.
After Whiteside’s breakout season during 2014-15, there was concern as to whether the big man could do it again. Whiteside has done that and then some. His numbers have progressively gone up over the last three seasons.
What Does De’Aaron Fox Say?
Now, that you have this song stuck in your head for the rest of the day, we have done our job. De’Aaron Fox is one of the most exciting rookies entering the NBA.
What can fantasy owners expect from Fox? Other than a great fantasy name opportunity, Fox’s strength is his ability to score along with steals. The Sacramento Kings are becoming a sneaky League Pass team.
Outside of Jordan sneakers, you’d be hard-pressed to find a better signature shoe line than Penny Hardaway had. Some of these shoes are over twenty years old, but are still popular. Sneaker heads may enjoy this nod to one of the most unique shoes ever, the Foamposite.
The Shaq and Penny Magic teams of the 90’s may have been short-lived, but the legacy can live on as you win a fantasy championship.
Harden of Eden
James Harden is involved in a number of great fantasy names. This one comes courtesy of Reddit user Danielknugs. ESPN has Harden as their third-ranked fantasy player heading into the season.
This is for good reason as Harden averaged 29 points, 11.2 assists and 8.1 rebounds last season. With the addition of Chris Paul, Harden’s numbers could regress a bit. Even if Harden does not put up the same type of stats, it is hard to imagine him not being one of the more valuable fantasy assets this season.
Over the summer, Hoodie Melo became a hoops icon. Carmelo Anthony has been seen multiple times playing pickup games or working out with a hoodie on. There is some thought “Hoodie Melo” is the best version of Anthony with the viral clips of Anthony draining pull-up threes.
This name gives you loads of amazing team logo possibilities. Fans will see whether Hoodie Melo will show up in Oklahoma City after Anthony was traded by the Knicks to the Thunder over the off-season.
Russell & Flow
Russell Westbrook is one of the best fantasy basketball players you can find. This name comes courtesy of Reddit user bflewis, and is a nod to the 2005 movie featuring Terrence Howard.
Westbrook is coming off a season, where he became the first player to average a triple-double since Oscar Robertson. Westbrook averaged 31.6 points, 10.4 assists and 10.7 rebounds. Westbrook has more help this season with Paul George and Carmelo Anthony. It will be interesting to see how these additions impact Westbrook’s numbers.
All the Ingles Ladies
Joe Ingles is not exactly a franchise player, but this name is too good to pass up thanks to Reddit user Chris the Greek. Ingles put up a modest 7.1 points, 2.7 assists and 3.2 rebounds per game last season. Ingles should see an uptick in production this season with Hayward now with the Celtics.
The Jazz gave him a $52 million contract this off-season, and he is expected to start in place of Hayward. According to Fantasy SP, Ingles has an ADP (average draft position) of 121 which means he is going in the 10-11th round in most 12-team leagues. With his shooting ability, Ingles could be a good sleeper candidate.
Dame of Thrones
This one has been around from a while, and was suggested by Reddit user Chkerns85. It’s a perfect fit for Game of Thrones fans or the Damian Lillard owner. Lillard has an ADP of 16.8, which means he is being selected in the early second round in 12-team leagues.
Lillard averaged a career high 27 points last season along with 5.9 assists and 4.9 rebounds making him one of the most well-rounded fantasy players to have on your team.
Stairway to Kevin
There are plenty of names to choose from if you are looking to rep Kevin Garnett. Most of the offerings involve cupcakes, but this name from Hashtag Basketball is our favorite. You don’t have to be a Led Zeppelin fan to appreciate this one.
Durant is locked in as one of the top fantasy picks. He averaged 25.1 points, 4.8 assists and 8.3 rebounds last season. The only concern is his health as Durant has had shortened seasons in two of the last three years.
