Once a matchup that provided some of the best annual games, Alabama vs. LSU has been decidedly one-sided as of late. The Crimson Tide have won the last five matchups by an average margin of 11.2 points, they haven’t lost at home to LSU since 2011, and they’re favored in this one by a healthy three touchdowns.

Despite falling to No. 2 in the playoff rankings, Nick Saban’s squad has done nothing wrong on the field. They’ve had just one game decided by single digits (an eight-point win at Texas A&M), they rank fourth in the country in points per game and first in points allowed per game. The only reason they aren’t No. 1 right now is because their Week 1 win over Florida State, a preseason Top-5 team that has turned into one of the country’s biggest disappointments, doesn’t look all that special anymore.

But while that number next to their name doesn’t really matter at this point in the season, it very well could provide some extra motivation for Saban’s team, which is the last thing LSU needs at this point.

If the Tigers are going to keep this close, they’ll need to be able to move the ball on the ground. Derrius Guice is one of the most talented backs in the country and is fresh off a 276-yard effort at Ole Miss, but finding running lanes against this Alabama defense has proven nearly impossible for all teams thus far. The Tide are allowing a minuscule 2.4 yards per rush and 68.1 rushing yards per game, both of which are the lowest marks in the country.

LSU has plenty of talent, and they have a hard-nosed style that we’ve seen over the year matches up well against Alabama, but on the road against a fired-up Crimson Tide squad is a potential recipe for disaster.

Still, as is always the case when these two SEC giants line up against each other, it’s a must-watch game.
