Preview
Well, here we are in December, and a matchup between the Pistons and 76ers looks like it could be a legitimate preview of the playoffs. Stan Van Gundy has the Pistons playing fantastic basketball right, as they rank seventh in the NBA in offensive rating and 12th in defensive rating en route to the second-best record in the East. The 76ers, who are just a couple games back of Detroit, have transformed into arguably the most entertaining team in basketball thanks to superstar duo of Ben Simmons and Joel Embiid.
But these teams could be down in the Bulls or Hawks section of the standings, and it would still be a must-watch game thanks to the matchup of Embiid vs. Andre Drummond. It isn’t quite on the level of Embiid vs. Hassan Whiteside, but these two formed quite the beef when they met in October earlier this season.
After piling up 30 points on just 15 field-goal attempts in a 97-86 Sixers victory, Embiid went after Drummond following the game:
Defensively, he doesn’t play any defense. …. When we started the game, he was being aggressive, and he was talking, too. … So what I was like [in my mind], ‘You want to do that? I’m going to kick your [butt] then.’ So that’s what I did. … In my mind, I was like, ‘You want to switch up, because you are playing against me. You want to be all physical and talk [trash].’ So I was like, ‘You are going to get your [butt beat].’ I love that.
Embiid did have seven turnovers, while Drummond put up a 14-and-14 double-double, but it’s still safe to say the youngster got the better of that matchup. And in this one, all eyes will be on how Drummond responds.
