Our Unbiased Reviews
  1. 1. Recoil S2 Gym

    Pros:
    • Recoil system allows for quick and efficient adjustments
    • Main straps adjust between one and six feet
    • Swivel mount rotates and locks to properly position the training system
    Cons:
    • Recoil system is quite heavy
    • Handles aren't textured
    • Pricey

Adjusting the Recoil S2 is as simple as pressing the Recoil button. You can use this mechanism to pull the straps out to your desired length and neatly rein them in when you’re done working out. There’s no need to worry about wasting precious time trying to even the straps out, as they automatically adjust to the same length.

I was sent a Recoil S2 Home for a hands-on review. It’s worth noting there are a few different versions of the S2. The entry-level Recoil S2 covers all the basics with a lashing strap, user’s guide and exercise guide. Upgrading to the S2 Home gets you a handy combination door mount and carrying bag for traveling. The Recoil S2 Gym includes a recoil mount while the premium S2 Pro bundles everything together.

The hallmark feature of the S2 is its recoil system, which is operated by pushing the Recoil button. This innovative mechanism distinguishes the Recoil S2 suspension training system apart from the competition, as you can quickly and efficiently make adjustments on the fly with minimal disruption to your fitness routine.

As logical as the Recoil method is, it definitely adds some extra weight. The suspension training kit weighs 3.3 pounds. In comparison, some of its competitors weigh just over a pound. This might not sound like much, but it’s worth keeping in mind if you plan on traveling with your S2.

Most suspension trainers can be set up virtually anywhere, including the S2. To enjoy an unlimited range of motion, your workout area should be roughly 1.5 times your height and as wide as your arm span. The included lashing strap has carabiners on both ends and can be looped around a secure point in your home, such as a support beam or a frame. You can even use a sturdy tree branch in your backyard or at a local park on a nice sunny day. A built-in swivel mount rotates and locks every 90 degrees to properly position the S2.

Once it’s set up you can use your Recoil S2 in four primary ways. The handgrips are positioned for under or overhand use, while the foot straps are designed for forward and reverse movements. Rubber grips keep you feeling confident and secure during various exercises — even when you start to break a sweat.

The main straps can be adjusted from one to six feet head to toe, which in turn gives you more control and accommodates a wider range of exercises. If you’re sharing your S2 with family, the system can also be adjusted to match different user heights. You can vary your workout routine by increasing or decreasing resistance as needed.

An included exercise guide takes you through a basic routine that includes torso and back stretches, forearm pikes and crunches, back row, bicep and tricep curls, and more. Recoil also offers a variety of free workout videos on their website and YouTube channel.

  2. 2. TRX All-in-one Training Kit

    Pros:
    • Built on the foundation of seven core movements
    • Includes anchors for indoor and outdoor use
    • Bonus workouts are included
    Cons:

    • Sparse exercise booklet

Whether you’re investing in your first suspension training kit or you’re a fitness professional who wants the best for your clients, this complete home training solution has you covered.

One big advantage of the TRX All-in-One is that it offers something for all skill levels, which gives you plenty of room to advance if you’re just starting out. You can also challenge yourself with new movements or increase your fitness routine if you’re ready to crush your next training goal. The lightweight kit weighs just one pound yet it can support up to 350 pounds, which is the same limit as the versatile Gorilla Travel Bow home gym.

You can use your TRX outdoors or inside. Two anchoring solutions are included so you can easily set it up anywhere. A convenient travel pouch is included so that you can easily pack up the resistance training kit and take it to the park or your local fitness studio.

As with other TRX products, the All-in-One is built on the foundation of seven core movements, including squats, planks, lunges, push, pull and more. If you’re just starting out, you can work on mastering these moves before advancing to the next level.

If you’re struggling to stay motivated during home workouts, you can turn to the included 35-page workout guide. Each TRX purchase also includes access to online training plans and workout guides for more personalized training sessions.

You can easily attach the kit to a door, rafter, ceiling mount, tree or another firm indoor or outdoor structure. Anchoring the resistance training kit involves setting up the foam anchor in a door frame or securing it to a ceiling using the ceiling mount.

You can also set up the straps on a single fixed point and adjust the length accordingly. Adjustable 56 to 77-inch resistance bands enable you to customize your workout goals.

Durable screwgate locking carabiners provide extra stability and allow you to rapidly remove or attach the gym ring or set up a punching bag. You can even purchase the kit with or without rings.

What Is the Best Suspension Training System?

The best suspension training system depends on your budget, fitness goals and other factors. You can splurge on a high-end system, such as the Recoil S2 and TRX bundles, or get by with a more affordable alternative.

Average American adults should aim for at least 150 active minutes per week, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Blending moderate-intensity aerobic activity and muscle-strengthening movements is key to boost your endurance and strengthen muscles.

The best suspension training kit helps you achieve your health and fitness goals by increasing your heart rate and increasing muscle strength.

Are Suspension Trainers worth It?

According to the Body Kinetics Health Club, one of the greatest benefits of suspension training is its ability to use gravity and your own body weight in a single dynamic format to produce challenging and effective workouts.

Regardless of which movement you're performing, your core will stay engaged throughout the exercise. While suspension training isn't the best type of workout for building overall muscle, it's optimal for increasing your balance, endurance, flexibility and core stability.

Even better, most training kits are lightweight and easily portable. Several even come with anchors so that you can work out indoors or outside.

Which Is the Best TRX System?

At the core of every TRX training set is the idea that you should master the following seven foundational movements: rotate, squat, hinge, push, pull, plank and lunge.

Once you have the basics down, you can add additional exercises to create a more varied workout routine. Each TRX training system listed below works well for mastering the basics and advancing when you're ready.

The entry-level TRX All-in-one training system is versatile and flexible and works just as well for beginners as it does for more advanced users. The All-in-one bundle includes indoor and outdoor anchors, a 35-page full-color workout guide, four resistance bands and a free 30-day trial for the TRX app.

GO is the most lightweight trainer offered by TRX. It's also designed to be used right away and can be set up in just 60 seconds or less. The TRX GO bundle includes a set of four mini resistance bands along with a stainless steel water bottle and a wall anchor.

If you're looking for the strongest available suspension trainer from TRX, consider the Pro 3. This trainer also has three various types of anchors for a complete workout.

How Do You Mount a Suspension Trainer?

One of the most convenient ways to mount your suspension trainer is over the door using a door anchor, which is often included with the trainer. You'll want a solid, flat surface to do your workouts and plenty of room for various movements.

As long as it's sturdy enough, you can mount your suspension trainer to the wall or ceiling. Some people also wrap the suspension trainer around a tree limb or a weight rack or similar equipment.
