Klay Thompson Issues Heated Message to Warriors After Blowout Loss

It was not a pretty game for the Golden State Warriors, who were humiliated by the Toronto Raptors on Friday night. This wasn’t the first time this season that the team has been on the losing side of a blowout, but this 130-77 loss just felt a lot worse.

In what is a crucial part of the season as the team tries to land a playoff spot, Golden State is struggling to secure a win. The Warriors have lost three straight games and 12 of their last 16, but this loss was so disappointing that it even had injured All-Star Klay Thompson fired up.

As Warriors wing Kent Bazemore told reporters after the game, “(Thompson) was just kind of going off on how he misses the game and how it’s not acceptable to lose this way. He’s fired up. He’s just—he’s fired up, man. It’s just hard, watching. He’s sitting over there and as a competitor, you want to be out there.”

Thompson’s Message to the Team

According to Bazemore, it was Thompson who has suffered the most by his injury and in a heated outburst after the game pleaded to his teammates to put in more effort after yet another embarrassing loss. Bazemore also told the team that losing in this manner is completely unacceptable.

In his postgame interview, rookie Nico Mannion said that while he was not there for Klay’s outburst, the veteran guard approached some of the younger teammates after their loss. Mannion said that Thompson was in the hallway saying that the team needs to have a little more heart.

“Everything was positive, there was no negativity,” Mannion said. “I think the biggest thing is we gotta stick together, we gotta be able to trust each other a little more. Some keys that I think that come with trusting each other, things like moving the ball and picking up defensively, whether it is transition or it’s a slow push, whatever it is, just being able to match up and communicate. I think with trusting each other, communication would be a lot better. There’s just a lot of little things we’ve got to pick up.”

Thompson has experienced a tough past couple of seasons, missing the 2019-20 season with an ACL tear and now this season with an Achilles tendon injury.

Thompson’s Reaction to Blowout

Bazemore said that all the Warriors veterans, including Steph Curry and Draymond Green (who were both out with minor injuries vs. Toronto) felt the sting of the loss to the Raptors.

“It’s a hard pill for them to swallow,” Bazemore said. “We’re talking about, these guys, five straight Finals appearances. This is, by any means, not acceptable by them at all. This hurts them more than anything. Klay was fired up after the game.”

Thompson traveled with the team to Tampa for the game against the Raptors. He was even seen shooting around before tip-off in team attire. His recovery from his Achilles injury which, has him out this season, seems to be on track, but after witnessing this blowout it’s almost certain that Thompson is, even more, fueled to make his return.

Both Curry and Draymond Green are noted as day-to-day and should not be missing too many more games. The Warriors need both Curry and Green to be dominant once they return to the court.

The current state that the Warriors are in right now is far from what Thompson is used to. Before the start of the season, the team was anticipated to be one of the top teams in the league, however, after Thompson’s injury right before the season those expectations diminished.

In addition to Thompson’s injury, Curry has been out for multiple games this season, along with Green, leaving the team without its foundation consistently. Although Thompson is not expected to be in a uniform anytime soon, offering support to his team is all he can offer as his team still fights to get a spot in the playoffs.
