Playoff odds: Yes +450, No -600

After trading away key pieces like safety Minkah Fitzpatrick and offensive tackle Laremy Tunsil last season, the Dolphins were clearly eyeing a rebuild in Brian Flores’ first year as head coach.

It was a change of pace this offseason, with Miami adding multiple pieces in search of a turnaround. The team bulked up the defense by inking cornerback Byron Jones to a lucrative free agent deal, as well as linebacker Kyle Van Noy and defensive lineman Shaq Lawson and Emmanuel Ogbah.

But the most intriguing addition came through the draft, when the Dolphins drafted former Alabama quarterback Tua Tagovailoa with the No. 5 overall pick.

While Tagovailoa won’t start Week 1 for the Dolphins, a good chuck of the franchise’s future is invested in the Hawaii native.

“I think the best way to handle it is really not pay attention to it — if that makes sense. Not being someone who just says, ‘Oh I don’t like it, I don’t care about it,’ ” Tagovailoa said. “I understand that it’s there, but I just feel like the focus — the main focus — is just being able to get into my playbook, being able to build relationships with the guys on the team and just focus on what we’ve got to do inside of the building.”

Veteran quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick will draw the start ahead of Tagovailoa in Week 1.

“This isn’t groundbreaking news,” Dolphins coach Brian Flores said. “In a year like this with limited, no OTA’s, no minicamp, limited training camp, modified training camp, that was the best decision for our team. He’s done a good job throughout the course of training camp.”

Regardless of who is under center, the Dolphins need to see improvement from their offensive line, which was the worst in the league least season. The unit has four new starters, including rookies Austin Jackson and Solomon Kindley. Miami gave up 58 sacks a season ago and didn’t have a semblance of a consistent ground game.

“You look at the overall play during camp of guys,” offensive coordinator Chan Gailey said. “You look at the maturity aspect of things, you look at the athletic aspect of things. When you take all of that into account, you come up with the best five that you can get on the field.”
