CarPlay is Apple’s unique in-car system for using iOS features while driving. CarPlay aims to be a safer, hands-free way to do things like make phone calls or access your favorite music apps while on the road. While some new cars come with CarPlay built in, you can also use an aftermarket receiver to add CarPlay functionality to your existing car. Check out the video above, which outlines the process of getting CarPlay to work on a Pioneer in-dash receiver.
In the video above, YouTuber “iPhoneTy” explains every step of the process, from locating the proper firmware to getting that firmware onto the head unit itself. The process should take only a few minutes to complete.
Not all Pioneer head units will work with Apple’s CarPlay. Earlier this year, Pioneer issued a press release that explained which in-dash receivers would be able to offer the CarPlay experience after having a firmware update. Those units are as follows: Pioneer AVIC-8000NEX ($1400 MSRP), AVIC-7000NEX ($1200 MSRP), AVIC-6000NEX ($900 MSRP), AVIC-5000NEX ($750 MSRP) and AVH-4000NEX ($700 MSRP). If you have any of those units in your car, then you can just follow along with the video tutorial above to get started. You will also need to have a compatible model of iPhone. The new iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus will support CarPlay. Other iPhone models that work with CarPlay include the iPhone 5, 5c, and 5s. You can learn more about CarPlay on Apple’s CarPlay page.
