After missing the final three games of last season due to a neck stinger, Dillon was in danger of moving on to a new organization following the completion of his rookie contract, but the 2020 second-round pick will remain in Green Bay on what's called the four-year qualifying contract, per Ian Rapoport of NFL Network. With his signing made official by the NFL, Dillon will emerge from the early days of the new league year as the Packers' current No. 2 running back behind newcomer Josh Jacobs, who is taking over for the departed Aaron Jones (Vikings). If he's in that role Week 1 of the upcoming campaign, Dillon likely would be poised for his workload from the last three years, which amounted to nearly 13.0 touches per game.
Dillon (thumb/neck) is in line to re-sign with the Packers, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reports. Considering Dillon missed the last three games of the season (including playoffs) due to a neck stinger, his return to Green Bay is pending a physical. Assuming he clears that hurdle, he'll be a part of a revamped backfield with Josh Jacobs swapping in for Aaron Jones as the team's top runner. A 2020 second-round pick, Dillon averaged 59.8 yards from scrimmage per game and scored 16 total touchdowns in 49 contests over the last three campaigns.
With Aaron Jones (knee) ruled out for a second straight contest, Dillon again will get a chance to pace the Packers backfield. It should be noted that Dillon has dealt with a groin injury in back-to-back weeks, but he looked spry at times during the team's win at Detroit on Thanksgiving, turning 17 touches into 81 yards from scrimmage. A fruitful outing may be in store for him Sunday against a Kansas City defense that has allowed the second-most yards per carry (4.8) to opposing running backs this season.
Dillon didn't practice Wednesday, but his return to the field a day later has the running back trending in a positive direction ahead of Sunday night's game against the Chiefs. The Packers' upcoming injury report will reveal Dillon's participation level Thursday.
Dillon was listed as questionable last week before taking 17 touches for 81 yards in a 29-22 win over the Lions on Thanksgiving Day. Aaron Jones (knee) sat out the Week 12 game and still isn't practicing, while third-stringer Patrick Taylor is the team's healthiest running back at the moment. Taylor took on 48 percent of the snaps last Thursday -- nearly matching Dillon (52 percent) -- but with only four touches on his 27 plays.
The Packers emerged from Sunday's win against the Chargers with known health concerns at running back after Aaron Jones (knee) and Emanuel Wilson (shoulder) got injured on the same possession. Dillon's appearance on Monday's practice report as limited due to a groin issue thus was a surprise, but he was able to log capped walkthroughs Tuesday and Wednesday and put himself into a position to be available Week 12. If he's confirmed as active about 90 minutes before Thursday's 12:30 p.m. ET kickoff, Dillon likely will be Green Bay's top option out of the backfield, though Patrick Taylor and James Robinson also will be on hand for any RB reps that linger.
Dillon's team-leading rushing output included a career-long scamper of 40 yards. Despite Aaron Jones returning to lead the Packers in touches the past couple weeks, Dillon has now totaled at least 75 scrimmage yards in three of his last five games. He'll strive to continue his solid recent complementary work next Sunday versus the Chargers.
Neither Dillon nor Aaron Jones found much success on the ground, as quarterback Jordan Love led the Packers in rushing yards on the afternoon, but the two RBs did combine for a 9-59-0 receiving line on 10 targets. Dillon's never been a consistent asset through the air, but with Green Bay scrambling to find something that works, short, high-percentage passes to the running backs might become a bigger element of the game plan as the coaching staff tries to build Love's confidence back up.
