Mac Jones : Fifth-year option not picked up
The Jaguars didn't pick up Jones' fifth-year contract option, AL.com reports. While Jacksonville picked up the fifth-year options of starting quarterback Trevor Lawrence and top running back Travis Etienne, the team elected not to do so with Jones, who the Patriots took 15th overall in the 2021 NFL Draft. The decision wasn't surprising, given that the value of the Alabama product's option was $25.6 million, the same figure that applied to Lawrence. With the Jaguars, Michael DiRocco of ESPN notes that Jones -- who was obtained from New England in exchange for a sixth-round draft pick -- is slated to compete with C.J. Beathard to be the team's top backup signal-caller in 2024, and potentially beyond. During his three-year stint with the Patriots, Jones drew 42 starts, but the 25-year-old's 2023 campaign wound up with him being benched after Week 12 in favor of Bailey Zappe.
Gabe Davis : Fellow WR let go
With Zay Jones having been released by the Jaguars, the team's wide receiver corps is now led by returnee Christian Kirk along with Davis and 2024 first-rounder Brian Thomas, Demetrius Harvey of the Florida Times-Union reports. With both Jones and Calvin Ridley -- who led the team with 1,016 receiving yards last season -- no longer on the roster, Kirk, Davis and Thomas form a new clear-cut top trio, with Parker Washington, Tim Jones, Devin Duvernay and Elijah Cooks in the depth WR mix. With the Bills in 2023, Davis recorded 45 catches (on 81 targets) for 746 yards and seven TDs in 17 regular-season outings, and in his new locale the 25-year-old's fantasy upside hinges largely on what sort of volume he sees relative to the promising Thomas, who was viewed by most as the No. 4 wideout prospect available in last week's draft.
Travis Etienne : Fifth-year option picked up
The Jaguars officially exercised Etienne's fifth-year option Monday. GM Trent Baalke said Saturday that Jacksonville would pick up the fifth-year options of both Etienne and quarterback Trevor Lawrence, and the team has now made both moves official. Since missing his entire rookie season due to a Lisfranc injury, Etienne has compiled back-to-back 1,000-yard rushing campaigns and totaled 17 touchdowns over the last two seasons. Now signed through the 2025 season, Etienne is locked in atop Jacksonville's backfield for the next two years, with Tank Bigsby and D'Ernest Johnson available to back him up.
Trevor Lawrence : Fifth-year option exercised
The Jaguars officially exercised Lawrence's fifth-year option Monday. Lawrence and fellow 2021 first-round pick Travis Etienne both had their fifth-year options officially picked up Monday, moves GM Trent Baalke alluded to Saturday. Lawrence is coming off back-to-back 4,000-yard seasons, and Jacksonville had made moves to fill the void left by offseason departure Calvin Ridley by signing Gabe Davis and drafting rookie Brian Thomas 23rd overall. The Jaguars will continue working toward a long-term deal with Lawrence, but in the meantime he now remains under contract through 2025.
Travis Etienne : To get fifth-year option
GM Trent Baalke said Saturday that the Jaguars will exercise the fifth-year option on Etienne's rookie contract, John Shipley of SI.com reports. The same can be said for fellow 2021 first-round pick Trevor Lawrence, which will become official by Thursday's deadline to lock in such options. After getting drafted three years ago, Etienne's pro debut was delayed due to a Lisfranc injury during the preseason in August 2021, but he's since rushed for more than 1,000 yards in both of the last two seasons while racking up 93 catches for 792 yards in 34 regular-season contests. He'll continue to lead Jacksonville's backfield for the next two campaigns ahead of Tank Bigsby once the aforementioned option is exercised.
Trevor Lawrence : To receive fifth-year option
GM Trent Baalke said Saturday that the Jaguars will exercise the fifth-year option on Lawrence's rookie contract, John Shipley of SI.com reports. Teams need to make such decisions for 2021 first-round picks by Thursday, and Jacksonville intends to exercise those options for both Lawrence and running back Travis Etienne. Lawrence will be working with a familiar backfield of Etienne and Tank Bigsby in 2024, but his receiving corps has been jostled a bit, with WR Calvin Ridley departing for the AFC South rival Titans and rookie second-rounder Brian Thomas and free-agent pickup Gabe Davis replacing him. While Lawrence has tossed for 4,000-plus yards in back-to-back campaigns, he has yet to reach 30 touchdowns through the air in any of his three seasons as a pro.
Tyler Shatley : Staying in Jacksonville
The Jaguars re-signed Shatley on Friday. Not all of the details of the deal are known at this point, but Shatley is now poised to spend at least next season in Jacksonville - his 11th straight year with the team. The Jaguars will likely seek to add talent at offensive line during the upcoming draft, but Shatley figures to at least provide veteran depth to the interior of the offensive line in 2024.
Gregory Junior : Returns to Jacksonville
The Jaguars re-signed Junior on Friday, Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 Houston reports. Junior was an exclusive rights free agent this offseason after playing in nine games last year. The cornerback mainly saw action on special teams and will look to carve out a depth role again in 2024.
