Godwin has impressed over the first few practices of training camp and has caught the eye of fellow star wideout Mike Evans, Scott Smith of the Buccaneers' official site reports. "He's going to have a great year," said Evans of Godwin. "Y'all saw him today - he looks like he's in midseason form. He's making plays, going deep, looks like the 2019 Chris Godwin." Godwin has battled injuries and underutilization in the red zone over the last few seasons, but he's still turned three consecutive 1,000-yard campaigns. However, the 2017 third-round pick has just 10 touchdowns on 285 receptions in that span, the fewest scoring grabs of any player with at least 200 catches during that period. Evans himself has called for the Buccaneers to give Godwin more red-zone and downfield opportunities, and with new offensive coordinator Liam Coen now at the helm, there may be a change in how the veteran wideout is deployed.

Latest Buccaneers News
Chris Godwin : Standing out early in camp
Tavierre Thomas : Cross-training at multiple spots
Thomas is seeing reps at nickelback, strong safety and free safety early in training camp, Scott Smith of the team's official site reports. Thomas signed with the Buccaneers this offseason after spending the last three seasons with the Texans, arriving with extensive experience playing the slot and 22 career starts overall. Thomas has already recorded two interceptions in the first three days of camp, and head coach Todd Bowles is taking advantage of the six-year veteran's versatility by having him cross-train at three positions in order to maximize his value to the secondary.
Sal Cannella : Slated to sign with Bucs
Cannella will be signing with Tampa Bay, Rick Stroud of the Tampa Bay Times reports. Cannella has yet to play an NFL snap since ending his college career in 2019, but he's had some success in the XFL/UFL, most notably leading the UFL with six receiving touchdowns while racking up 496 receiving yards (fifth-most in the league) on 53 receptions (third-most) with Arlington this spring. Cannella will look to earn a roster spot among a Tampa Bay TE corps that is headed by Cade Otton, who played on over 90 percent of the team's offensive snaps last season.
Kaevon Merriweather : Not practicing
Merriweather (ankle) is "being held out of practice" during training camp, Scott Smith of the Buccaneers' official site reports. The safety also did not participate in the team's offseason program, per Smith. Merriweather left Tampa Bay's divisional-round playoff loss to Detroit with an ankle injury. The second-year pro recorded 21 tackles during the 2023 regular season and played more on special teams than defense.
Anthony Nelson : Participating in camp
Nelson (elbow) is practicing with the team during training camp, Christopher O'Meara of The Associated Press reports. The linebacker injured his elbow during the Buccaneers' divisional-round playoff loss to the Lions. Nelson is in line for a depth role with Tampa Bay after recording 40 or more tackles each of the last two seasons.
Jamel Dean : Healthy again
Dean (back) participated in practice Thursday, Rick Stroud of The Tampa Bay Times reports. The starting cornerback suffered a back injury during Tampa Bay's divisional-round playoff loss to Detroit. Dean finished the 2023 regular season with 61 tackles, four passes defensed and two fumble recoveries. The sixth-year pro is slated for a starting role again in 2024.
Jalen McMillan : Shines at practice
McMillan excelled at Thursday's practice, catching at least two touchdown passes from starting QB Baker Mayfield, according to Rick Stroud of the Tampa Bay Times. Greg Auman of Fox Sports and Scott Smith of the Buccaneers' official site confirm that McMillan was one of Tampa Bay's standouts during the second day of training camp practices. The rookie third-round pick is expected to compete with incumbent No. 3 receiver Trey Palmer, a 2023 sixth-round selection who had only 385 yards on 68 targets last year (5.7 yards per target). Palmer may theoretically be a better fit now that Chris Godwin is moving back to the slot as his primary position -- which pushes the third WR out to the perimeter more -- but McMillan is emerging as an early favorite for the No. 3 job.
Chase Edmonds : Dealing with undisclosed injury
Edmonds isn't practicing due to an undisclosed injury, Brianna Dix of the Buccaneers' official site reports. Coach Todd Bowles declined to elaborate on the nature of the injury that has Edmonds sidelined for the start of training camp. The 28-year-old is expected to compete with rookie fourth-round pick Bucky Irving and others for backup roles behind starting running back Rachaad White.
