Coach Andy Reid said Friday that Brown (shoulder) is not expected to suit up for Kansas City's regular-season opener against the Ravens on Thursday, Sept. 5, Matt McMullen of the Chiefs' official site reports. Brown was given a 4-to-6 week recovery timetable after suffering a sternoclavicular injury Aug. 10, so Reid is essentially offering an acknowledgement that the wideout's earliest possible return date will come Week 2 versus the Bengals. It's possible that Brown will need longer than that to get full healthy, but the Chiefs' decision not to place him on short-term IR is a vote of confidence from the team that he will need to miss less than four games. For Week 1, Patrick Mahomes' top receiving targets will be TE Travis Kelce, second-year wideout Rashee Rice, rookie first-round pick Xavier Worthy and incumbent receiver Justin Watson. The team also recently signed JuJu Smith-Schuster and pass-catching running back Samaje Perine as depth boosts.

GM Brett Veach relayed Thursday that he hopes Perine will be able to play in next week's season opener against the Ravens, Adam Teicher of ESPN.com reports. The Chiefs kick off their 2024 campaign next Thursday, which shortens the amount of time the looming addition will have to get up to speed with the team's offense ahead of Week 1. However, as the season progresses it's plausible that Perine will have a chance to earn a key complementary role for his new team behind top back Isiah Pacheco.
Rice is not expected to begin the regular season on the commissioner's exempt list, and the NFL will instead make a decision on his status after the legal process has concluded, Mark Maske of The Washington Post reports. Rice seems unlikely to entirely avoid a suspension for his off-field problems this offseason, but it doesn't appear that the league will intervene until the legal situation pays itself out, which could occur later this year or potentially even be delayed until 2025. He faces eight felony charges in connection with a high-speed, multi-car hit-and-run, including charges of aggravated assault, collision involving serious bodily injury and collision involving injury. As long as Rice is left eligible to take the field, he'll be locked in as a top target for quarterback Patrick Mahomes and be in prime position to build off his highly successful rookie season, but at some point it seems all but guaranteed he'll face a multi-game suspension. The Chiefs brought in wideouts Marquise Brown (shoulder) and Xavier Worthy to join Rice and TE Travis Kelce atop the receiving corps, but neither seem especially likely to intrude on Rice's workload, as he primarily operates from the slot and on short routes.
Thompson (undisclosed) was moved to the reserve/non-football illness list Tuesday. Thompson suffered a seizure and went into cardiac arrest in June and has yet to take the field since. It's not clear how much longer he may need to recover, but he'll kick off the season on a reserve list.
Perine is slated to sign with Kansas City on Wednesday, Jordan Schultz of BleacherReport.com reports. Perine, who was released as one of Denver's roster cuts Tuesday, is a proven pass-catcher and now lands in what projects to be one of the NFL's top-scoring offenses. Isiah Pacheco is firmly established atop the Chiefs' depth chart, but Clyde Edwards-Helaire (illness) and Carson Steele are surmountable competition for a depth role. Perine secured a career-high 50of 56 passes for 455 yards across 17 regular-season games with the Broncos last season, in addition to 53 carries for 238 rushing yards and one score.
Steele has a spot on Kansas City's initial 53-man roster, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reports. The 225-pound undrafted rookie was a preseason standout, taking 11 carries for 87 yards and two touchdowns. The Chiefs list him at fullback on their depth chart -- and coach Andy Reid mentioned the possibility of using him in that role -- but Steele mostly lined up as a lone running back during the preseason. There's potential to earn snaps and touches early on, as Kansas City has a weak group of running backs beyond Isiah Pacheco and could do some shuffling in the coming days to work out the other backup spots.
The Cowboys are trading Hendershot to the Chiefs for a conditional seventh-round pick, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reports. It was previously reported that Dallas was waiving the tight end, but the Chiefs apparently were interested and made a small offer to ensure he wouldn't land with a team that had higher waiver priority. Hendershot now slots in at the bottom of Kansas City's depth chart, potentially competing with rookie Jared Wiley for the No. 3 TE role.
The Chiefs placed Omenihu (knee) on the reserve/PUP list Tuesday, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports. Omenihu missed all of training camp as he continues his rehab from a torn ACL suffered in the AFC Championship Game against the Ravens last postseason. His placement on PUP knocks Omenihu out for at least the first four games of the season. George Karlaftis and Chris Jones will key Kansas City's pass rush while Omenihu gets healthy.
