Campbell (shoulder) has been playing catch from 90 feet out, Christopher Smith of The Springfield Republican reports. Campbell has been on the injured list since April 12 with a right shoulder impingement, and his throwing program has progressed slower than expected -- though manager Alex Cora said the right-hander is feeling better. He remains without a clear return timeline, but one may emerge once he progresses to mound work and faces live hitters.
Pivetta (elbow) will throw a 50-pitch live batting practice session Saturday, Christopher Smith of The Springfield Republican reports. If Pivetta comes out the live BP session without any hiccups, he should be cleared to make a rehab start next week. That would probably set him up to rejoin the Red Sox rotation the following week if all goes well. Pivetta has been out since early April with a right elbow flexor strain.
Grissom (hamstring) will play back-to-back full rehab games at Triple-A Worcester on Saturday and Sunday and could be activated from the injured list Tuesday, Ian Browne of MLB.com reports. Grissom has gone 5-for-22 with two doubles and two steals so far in seven rehab games as he works his way back from a hamstring injury. As long as he comes out of Saturday's and Sunday's contests with no issues, he could be ready for his Red Sox and season debut Tuesday against the Giants. Grissom is slated to be Boston's everyday second baseman, although it's possible he'll have extra off days mixed in initially.
Casas revealed Friday that he's dealing with torn cartilage in his left ribcage, not a fractured rib as had been previously reported, Alex Speier of The Boston Globe reports. The injury is an unusual one and carries a wide range of potential recovery timelines, with Casas saying it could be anywhere from three to nine weeks before he's cleared for cardio and strengthening activities. Once that happens, he would presumably need a few more weeks before he's game-ready. Casas did add that he's very optimistic he'll be back at some point this season, it's just unclear when that might be. Bobby Dalbec is currently filling in at first base for the Red Sox.
Yoshida is not in the lineup for Friday's contest against the Cubs. It marks the fourth straight game that Yoshida has been absent from the lineup. Rafael Devers is getting another start at designated hitter Friday and the Red Sox don't seem to trust Yoshida's defense in the outfield, leading to him receiving just one plate appearance so far this week. The plan is for Devers to return to third base Saturday, with Yoshida being used at DH that day.
Abreu is not in the lineup for Friday's game versus the Cubs. Southpaw Shota Imanaga is toeing the rubber for the Cubs, so the left-handed hitting Abreu is receiving a day off. Tyler O'Neill will cover right field and Rob Refsnyder will get a start in left for the Red Sox.
Red Sox manager Alex Cora said Thursday that Gonzalez (wrist) isn't progressing as hoped and isn't considered close to a return from the 10-day injured list, Pete Abraham of The Boston Globe reports. Gonzalez was placed on the IL on April 13 with a left wrist sprain, and after an MRI revealed no structural damage, the expectation was that the infielder would be ready rejoin the Red Sox after a minimum-length stay on the shelf. However, with Gonzalez still experiencing stiffness in his wrist and having yet to resume baseball activities, he looks poised to remain out until some time in May.
