Surtain was named the 2024 NFL Defensive Player of the Year on Thursday, Josh Dubow of The Associated Press reports. Surtain became the first cornerback to win DPOY since Stephon Gilmore in 2019, while the former was just the second Bronco all-time to win the award after linebacker Randy Gradishar did so in 1978. Surtain appeared in 16 regular-season games in 2024, recording 45 total tackles (34 solo), 11 passes defensed, including four interceptions, one of which he returned for a 100-yard pick-six in Week 5 versus the Raiders. The cornerback also added a forced fumble and a fumble recovery during the season.

Latest Broncos News
Pat Surtain : Wins Defensive Player of the Year
Surtain was named the 2024 NFL Defensive Player of the Year on Thursday, Josh Dubow of The Associated Press reports.
Dondrea Tillman : Impressive rookie campaign
Tillman recorded 23 total tackles (13 solo), including 5.0 sacks, over 12 regular-season games in 2024. Tillman, a rookie from Indiana University of Pennsylvania, finished tied for the fifth-most sacks on the Broncos defense in 2024 despite playing just 230 defensive snaps across 12 regular-season contests. The 26-year-old was also a major contributor on special teams, logging 203 special-teams snaps. Tillman is now set to be an exclusive rights free agent this summer, meaning the Broncos can retain him by simply extending a qualifying offer. With his impressive production in Denver, the Broncos are likely to bring him back as the team's top rotational edge rusher in 2025, playing behind Jonathon Cooper and Nik Bonitto.
Devon Key : Plays every game in 2024
Key finished the 2024 regular season with 33 tackles (17 solo), including 1.0 sacks, across 17 games. Key appeared in one regular-season game in 2023 while spending most of the year on the Broncos' practice squad. He made Denver's 53-man roster at the end of training camp, splitt his 496 snaps evenly between defense (240) and special teams (256) and even started at safety in Week 9 and 11. Key will likely remain in a backup role at safety behind Brandon Jones and P.J. Locke for the 2025 campaign.
John Franklin-Myers : Career-high 7.0 sacks in 2024
Franklin-Myers finished the 2024 regular season with 40 tackles (18 solo), including 7.0 sacks, across 17 games. Franklin-Myers was traded by the Jets to the Broncos in late April in what was largely a salary dump for Gang Green. The 2018 fourth-round pick responded with a career-best 7.0 sacks and played a key role in the Broncos' league-leading 63.0 sacks in the regular season. Franklin-Myers, Zach Allen, Nik Bonitto and Jonathon Cooper will look to replicate their success in the 2025 campaign.
D.J. Jones : Production drops in 2024
Jones tallied 42 total tackles (21 solo), including 1.0 sacks, and three passes defended over 17 regular-season games in 2024. Despite starting all 17 of the Broncos' regular-season games this year, Jones recorded fewer tackles (46 to 42), sacks (2.0 to 1.0) and forced fumbles (three to zero) compared to his 2023 campaign. The 30-year-old was outproduced by fellow nose tackle Malcolm Roach, who logged more tackles (43 to 42), sacks (2.5 to 1.0) and forced fumbles (one to zero) in 2024 despite staring just one game. Jones just concluded the final season of a three-year, $30 million deal signed with Denver in 2022, making him an unrestricted free agent this summer. He's likely to be a sought-after name for teams in need of interior defensive line help this offseason.
Malcolm Roach : Career year in 2024
Roach recorded 43 total tackles (18 solo), including 2.5 sacks, two passes defended and one forced fumble over 17 regular-season games in 2024. The first-year Bronco had the best year of his NFL career in 2024, setting new career highs in tackles, sacks and forced fumbles, despite serving as the team's No. 2 nose tackle behind D.J. Jones. Roach outperformed Jones in several key categories, tallying more tackles (43 to 42), sacks (2.5 to 1.0) and tackles for loss (five to one) this season. With Jones set to hit unrestricted free agency this summer, Roach likely will have the opportunity to compete for the team's top interior defensive lineman spot. He's expected to remain in Denver in 2025 after signing a two-year, $7 million deal with the Broncos last offseason.
Pat Surtain : Sees tackling numbers dip in 2024
Surtain finished the 2024 regular season with 45 tackles (34 solo), 11 pass defenses (including three interceptions and a pick-six), one forced fumble and one fumble recovery across 16 games. Surtain's 45 tackles were the lowest of his four-year NFL career, but he managed to tie a career-high with four interceptions, including a 100-yard pick-six against the Raiders in Week 5. Surtain signed a record-breaking four-year, $96 million extension in early September, which made him the highest-paid cornerback in the league. Surtain and Riley Moss figure to be the Broncos' starting outside corners for the 2025 campaign.
Jonathon Cooper : Continues to improve in 2024
Cooper tallied 58 total tackles (33 solo), including 10.5 sacks, one pass defended and one forced fumble over 17 regular-season games in 2024. The fourth-year pro was part of one of the league's best edge-rush duos this season, as he and Nik Bonitto combined for a staggering 24 sacks -- the most of any edge-rush tandem in the NFL during the regular season. Cooper has steadily improved his sack totals in each of his last two seasons, jumping from 2.0 sacks in 2022 to 10.5 in 2024. He's become an integral part of the Broncos' defensive success and signed a four-year, $60 million extension with the team in November, keeping him a Bronco for the foreseeable future. Expect Cooper to remain a major headache for opposing quarterbacks as one of Denver's top edge rushers in 2025.
