‘Dancing With the Stars’ 4/21/2014 Recap: Top 10 Highlights

Did you watch Dancing With the Stars tonight? It was a good one with a crazy guest judge and killer performances. Check out the recap and highlights here.

1. The Opening Sequence Was a “Party In The U.S.A.”

As usual, there was a killer opening number, which included all the dancers and contestants. Even the judges joined in. This week, everyone danced to a watered-down version of Miley Cyrus’ “Party In The USA,” featuring a carnival theme.

2. Redfoo Was Tonight’s Guest Judge

Tonight’s guest judge was LMFAO’s Redfoo, on behalf of the theme for the evening “Party Theme.” For his entrance, Redfoo came out with the dancers to “Party Rock Anthem,” shuffling with everyone on the dance floor. As far as judging, Redfoo said he wasn’t really there for technique reasons. He was “looking for something to rock his socks off.” Redfoo even had a magenta, black, and white zebra-striped paddle for scoring the contestants.

3. Nene and Tony Danced First Tonight

Tony and Nene danced the salsa to Nelly’s “It’s Getting Hot In Here” and they took things into the audience where Nene grinded on her husband Gregg Leakes. During the performance, Tony took his shirt off, which the ladies in the audience definitely appreciated. After their performance, Nene’s hubby bowed down to her and the judges seemed to follow suit since they gave her a 33 out of 40.

4. Candace Cameron Bure Was the First Announced to be in the Bottom Three

Candace and partner Mark Ballas were in the bottom two last week and were announced as being in the bottom once again. Tonight, the couple danced to Icona Pop’s “I Love It,” but the judges didn’t quite “love it.” Judge Bruno Tonioli complimented her on her leg placement, but had a few critiques, as did the other judges. Even so, Candace ended up with a 32 out of 40.

5. Derek Hough Choreographed the Macy’s Stars of Dance Performance

For the Macy’s Stars of Dance routine, the dancers were fierce, dark, and full of power as they performed to the techno hit “Animals.”

6. James Maslow and Peta Murgatroyd Re-Enacted Grease

With the assistance of a couple other professional dancers to start things off, Peta Murgatroyd and James Maslow killed it as the characters from Grease on the dance floor. While most of the judges loved their performance, Len Goodman was not a fan and thought that Maslow’s footing was too heavy. All in all, they got a great score of 35 out of 40.

7. Danica and Val Were Announced as Being in Jeopardy, Which Surprised the Audience

Tonight, Danica and Val shocked the audience when it was announced that they were in the bottom tonight. The two came out in a sexy routine to Whitney Houston’s “I Wanna Dance With Somebody.” The couple started things off very sensual and slow, giving the crowd a steamy show, but then broke out into a more upbeat routine. With 9’s across the board, the couple received a 36 out of 40.

By the way, partner Val announced that Danica actually has a boyfriend and his name is Scott. Val extended a “thank you” to Scott for allowing him to dance with Danica each week.

8. Maksim Gets Scared of the Competition, But Earns a Perfect Score With Meryl

Meryl Davis has a rough time with Maksim Chmerkovskiy this week as Maks begins to freak out, realizing he actually could win this season. Regardless of this, he pulled it together and did an amazing job with Meryl as usual. Len Goodman was the first judge to speak and gave Maksim such praise. It was so nice and refreshing and earned them a perfect score of 40 out of 40, all 10’s.

Competitor Charlie White also killed it tonight with dancer Sharna Burgess. In the middle of the routine, the ballroom went dark and used black lights with neon glow sticks to show off the couple’s moves. While they didn’t earn a perfect score like Maks and Meryl, Sharna and Charlie got a score of 36 out of 40.

9. Amy Purdy Stunned as Always

Purdy and Derek Hough amazed us all with another insane routine in the ballroom. As the two danced to “Shout” with a wedding theme and amped up the crowd, everyone cheered. Though there was a tiny slip up in the middle of the performance, the judges drooled over Amy Purdy as they have each week. The duo scored a 38 out of 40.

10. Drew Carey Was Eliminated

Drew Carey was the third contestant to be announced as being in jeopardy and ultimately, he was sent home.

On next week’s DWTS, Ricky Martin will be both a performer and a guest judge. It will be a Latin-themed night and it will be the first night that each couple has to perform two dances.
