WWE Night of Champions 2014: The Results & Highlights You Need to Know

The WWE is making sure all of its champions compete on WWE Night of Champions 2014. The biggest title bout of all will pit the seemingly unstoppable WWE World Heavyweight Champion Brock Lesnar against former champion John Cena. We’re here to make sure you get all the evening’s results and highlights of this September PPV/special WWE Network event. Make sure you check out the live PPV Kickoff show on the WWE Network, starting at 7:30 p.m. EST to check out Christian’s Peep Show segment with Chris Jericho!


The Usos (Jimmy and Jey Uso) (c) vs. Goldust and Stardust (WWE Tag Team Championship)

Winner: The new WWE Tag Team Champions, Goldust and Stardust!

Results/Highlights: Goldust and Jey started things off pretty fiercely as Jey took Goldust down with an elbow. Jimmy got tagged in and began tearing down Goldust before his offense quickly stopped. Goldust tagged in a fresh Stardust, but Stardust was met with a nice exchange of moves from Jimmy. Both men caught Stardust with a pull down move that targeted Stardust’s throat over the top rope. Stardust eventually recovered and got his brother to lay out Jimmy with a nice, swift punch. Both men then began to further injure Jimmy with a concentrated, tag team offense. Later on during this bout, Jimmy tagged in Jey for a hot set of moves against their adversaries. Jey headed to the outside, hopped up on the barricade and splashed Stardust. However, he was put down when Goldust power slammed him on the arena floor. Once back in the ring, the Dust brothers worked over a now weakened Jey Uso. Jey soon began to fight off Goldust at one point but he was met with a stiff spinebuster. Stardust entered the ring to continue Jey’s punishment. Jey looked to land a Samoan Slam but was countered with a nice neckbreaker by Stardust. Stardust even went as far as punching Jimmy off the ring apron and tagging in Goldust behind the ref’s back as he tried to handle a pissed off Jimmy. Jey managed to get the hot tag after dodging Stardust as he ran right into the corner ring post and kicked Goldust. Jey went to town on Stardust by injuring his leg by slamming it over the ring apron. Jimmy took flight and vaulted over the top rope right onto Goldust. Then Jey took down Stardust with a top rope splash and a Samoan Slam. Out of nowhere, Jey hit a Super Kick on Goldust but Jey was caught off guard with a inverted DDT from Stardust. Stardust locked Jey into the ring ropes, but Jimmy saved him but was caught with an elbow from Stardust. Soon, all four men ended up crashing and burning on each other with splashes to the outside. Shockingly, Stardust helped win the titles by rolling up Jey in a school boy pin.


Sheamus (c) vs. Cesaro (WWE United States Championship)

Winner: And still the WWE United States Champion, Sheamus!

Results/Highlights: Both men locked up at the start of the match and entered into a nice set of reversals. As the match’s start wore on, both men got even more intense. Cesaro slapped Sheamus, which was a mistake as it got him even more intense. Sheamus landed a clothesline, a flying knee and rolling senton on Cesaro afterwards. Sheamus looked to do even more damage, but Cesaro countered by laying Sheamus’ throat over the top rope. Cesaro began chocking Sheamus with his foot, but Sheamus soon jumped back up and tackled his rival with ground and pound offense. Both men soon spilled to the outside for even more strike exchanging. Once the match returned to the ring, Cesaro got caught with an elbow from a returning Sheamus. As Sheamus looked to land a big move from the top rope, Cesaro knocked him off with an European Uppercut. Cesaro then began laying in several moves and a chokehold on his championship opponent. A series of sleeper holds were done between both men before Cesaro dropped Sheamus with a back suplex. Sheamus managed to get back to his feet and begin some offense before getting put down with a clothesline from Cesaro. Cesaro followed that up with an European Uppercut on two occasions. Sheamus returned the favor with two Irish Curse maneuvers to Cesaro’s back. Sheamus tried to land his 10 punches on Cesaro’s chest, but Cesaro fought back with some stiff strikes. Cesaro headed to the top rope next but he was slammed back down pretty swiftly. Soon, several slams between both men were landed for several minutes. Sheamus got up and got hyped enough to land a Brogue Kick, but he missed and as met with a side suplex from Cesaro. Sheamus recovered, went for another Brogue Kick, missed and got caught with Cesaro’s Alpine Water Slide slam. Cesaro began taunting Sheamus by slapping him, which did nothing but piss off Sheamus even further. Sheamus got more excited, but he was met with a stiff boot. Cesaro went to land another big strike but he was eventually laid out with a final Brogue Kick.


Dolph Ziggler (c) vs. The Miz (WWE Intercontinental Championship)

Winner: The new WWE Intercontinental Champion, The Miz!

Results/Highlights: An initial lockup between both competitors was followed up some headlocks and shoulder drops. Ziggler landed a Lou Thesz press on Miz but Mix fought out of it. Ziggler then fought out of Miz’s Figure 4 Leglock attempt and landed a series of elbow drops on Miz. Miz escaped a final elbow and countered Ziggler with an elbow and a nice big boot. Miz soon landed a few boots to a now prone Ziggler. Ziggler was soon locked into a sleeper gold, which he tried to fight out of but he was dropped again with a clothesline from Miz. Miz then started dominating Ziggler with series of kicks. Soon Ziggler recovered in the corner and landed a nice clothesline on a running Miz. Ziggler started building up some momentum with his signature line of comeback moves. Ziggler soon sent Miz out of the ring with an over the top rope clothesline. He then flung Miz back first into the side ring barrier. As Ziggler looked to re-enter the ring, Sandow pulled Ziggler from the ring apron and kicked R Truth in the gut. Sandow pushed his luck by getting in the face of the Florida Georgia Line and getting chased to the back by R Truth. As Miz got back up, his Hollywood face was met wit ha Ziggler Super Kick. Ziggler looked to land a Fame Asser but Miz put him on his back as he locked in the Figure Four Leglock. Ziggler then fought his hardest by grabbing the bottom ring rope and finally landing a Fame Asser on Miz. Sandow ran back to the ring and distracted Ziggler but he was caught with a Superkick. Amidst this big distraction, Miz rolled up Ziggler for the win.


Roman Reigns vs. Seth Rollins

Winner: Seth Rollins by forfeit…

Results/Highlights: Due to Roman Reigns’ emergency surgery, this match was cancelled. Rollins headed out to the ring anyway to gloat about himself. He also crapped all over his former partner and also gave him 10 seconds to show up for their bout. The ref run the bell and entered into a 10 count as Rollins basked in the crowd’s boos. Rollins was then awarded the forfeit win. Even after Rollins’ cheap win, Rollins began gloating some more to the live audience. He then issued an open challenge to anyone in the back.


Dean Ambrose vs. Seth Rollins

Winner: No one…

Best Moments/Highlights: Dean arrived in a cab and answered Rollins’ open challenge. Ambrose ran int other ring and began tearing Rollins apart to the crowd’s delight. Both men began fighting into the stands in an intense street fight. The Authority soon arrived and told security to separate both men. Ambrose took flight on two occasions and laid out both security and Rollins. The fight continued as Ambrose laid into Rollins with tons of punches as he was laid out on a chair. Ambrose then clotheslined Rollins over the security barrier and then managed to pick up a steel chair. Ambrose was stopped though, which allowed Rollins to rest comfortably in the ring corner. Ambrose was soon restrained by The Authority. Rollins then left with his briefcase and HHH and Stephanie. Ambrose was pulled all the way to the back.

Mark Henry vs. Rusev

Winner: Rusev!

Results/Highlights: Henry arrived with his new All-American adorned tights. Lilian Garcia sung the National Anthem before this big match officially began. Once Rusev and Henry stood apart from one another, a powerful series of punches between both men took place. Henry dominated Rusev as he pushed him various times to the outside of the ring. Soon, Rusev headed back in and landed some kicks to Henry’s thighs. Henry pushed Rusev back to the outside and followed him, but he was pushed by Rusev back first into the steel ring steps. Once back in the ring, Rusev stuffed Henry with two corner back splashes and falling headbutts. Rusev kept Henry at bay with even more strikes and a tight submission hold. Henry looked to get out of the hold and get back to his feet, but Rusev cut him off with a quick Russian Leg Sweep. Henry found himself locked into another submissions hold by Rusev soon after. Henry got to his feet this time and built up some momentum with a clothesline and a corner ring splash. Henry couldn’t keep his offensive string up though and he was soon caught with a Rusev Spinning Kick. Rusev tried to lock in The Accolade but Henry powered out of it in an amazing fit of strength. Henry then shocked the live crowd by dropping Rusev with The World’s Strongest Slam. Rusev slipped out to the outside and even laid out Henry with a sudden Superkick. Rusev was shocked to see Henry shake off the pain of that kick, but he laid in even more kicks for good measure. Rusev finally managed to lock in The Accolade on Henry for the tapout victory.


Chris Jericho vs. Randy Orton

Winner: Randy Orton!

Results/Highlights: As soon as the match began, Orton got the better of Jericho by punching him down into the ring corner. Soon, Jericho fought Orton off with a chop and a followup dropkick. Orton fell to the outside and was then met with a Baseball Slide from Jericho. Jericho landed as much offense as he could to Orton on the outside before forcefully throwing him back into the ring. Orton recovered though and made a bit of comeback against Y2J. Jericho caught Orton off guard at one point as Orton ran right into his boots. Jericho headed to the top rope, but Orton pushed Jericho groin first onto the top rope. Orton then landed a nice Superplex to an even weaker Jericho. After only getting a 2-count. Orton locked on a sleeper hold to Jericho. Jericho fought out of it and pushed Orton off, but he got pushed to the outside of the ring as he launched himself at Orton. Orton got in a few more strikes on Y2J on the outside for a bit (Orton showed a rare act of kindness by taking JBL’s hat and moving it out of harm’s way). Orton looked to destroy Y2J even further by backdropping him right onto the announce table. Back in the ring, Orton and Jericho continued to tear into each other. Y2J soon got back to his normal self and came back with his signature offense on Orton. Jericho had the upper hand for a while until Orton put him back down with a smooth Powerslam. Orton got back to his feet and looked to land a knee drop, but Jericho moved out of the way at the last second. Jericho headed to the top rope again and successfully hit a double axe handle. Jericho then looked to land his Lionsault but Orton dodged it and dropped Jericho with his signature neckbreaker. Orton looked to nail Y2J with an RKO next, but Jericho pushed him off and landed a Lionsault. Orton kicked out of a follow up pin attempt and fell to the outside ring apron. Jericho ran to the top rope and went for his dropkick, but Orton ran into the ring and looked to land his ring apron DDT. Jericho fought it off, but he was dropped even after countering Orton. Orton went for his Punt Kick, but Y2J dodged it and locked Orton in the Walls of Jericho. Orton inched ever so slowly to the ring ropes to escape, but Jericho pulled him away from the ropes. Orton pushed Jericho off to the outside and eventually put down Jericho with his apron DDT. As Orton looked to land his RKO, Y2J surprised him with a sudden Codebreaker. Orton kicked out at two after being hit, which shocked Jericho and the live crowd. Y2J hopped to the top rope for another big move, but Orton suckered him in and landed a vicious RKO for the 1-2-3.


Paige (c) vs. AJ Lee vs. Nikki Bella (WWE Divas Championship)

Winner: The new WWE Divas champion, AJ Lee!

Results/Highlights: Paige and Nikki got in each other faces as soon as the bell rang. When they put their attention on AJ, they were met with boots to the face. AJ began ruling the match as she began beating down Nikki. Nikki managed to recover and soon locked AJ in a tight sleeper hold. AJ was thrown to the outside of the ring, which led to Paige re-entering the match. Nikki hit her with a nice top rope side kick and a surprising armbar submission hold. Paige got out of the hold, but she soon found herself on the outside. AJ slammed both her opponents to the outside barricade before turning her attention to a prone Paige. AJ got her kicks in on Paige for a couple of minutes before Nikki made her return. Nikki began working over AJ for a bit with even more punches and kicks. Nikki got pushed to the outside once again, which made way for Paige and AJ to continue their friendly rivalry. AJ denied Paige’s love and affection, which led to Paige headbutting her so-called bestie. Paige looked to land a move from the ring apron on AJ, but Nikki pushed her off and looked to get a sneak pin on AJ. AJ kicked out, but she soon ended up getting beat down by Nikki. Nikki went for a big swinging side slam when she caught AJ from the top rope, but AJ fought it off and locked in her Black Widow submission hold. Paige returned before Nikki could tap out and kicked Nikki right in the face. As Paige looked to land a superplex on AJ, Nikki hopped back in and dropped both women with a Tower of Doom. Afterwards, Nikki capitalized on a weakened Paige with her Torture Rack finisher. Her pin attempt was interrupted by AJ, though. AJ then got the win by locking in her Black Widow submission hold on Paige.

Brock Lesnar (c) vs. John Cena (WWE World Heavyweight Championship)

Winner: John Cena via disqualification…

Results/Highlights: As soon as the bell rang, Cena ran full steam ahead into Lesnar. Lesnar stopped him with a swift tackle and several shoulder thrusts into the corner ring apron. Lesnar went for his 1st German Suplex of the bout but Cena pushed him off, landed two clotheslines and a sudden Attitude Adjustment. Lesnar wasn’t down for long as he kicked out at 1. Lesnar was knocked loopy for a while before he locked in a Kimura arm lock on Cena out of nowhere. Cena made it to the bottom rope to break Lesnar’s hold. Lesnar began putting his adversary down even more as he landed more punches and German Suplexes. Cena went for several comeback attempts, but they were all stopped with ease by Lesnar. Lesnar went for three vertical snap suplexes in an attempt to break down Cena even more. Cena tried his hardest to fight back with a series of punches on Lesnar, but he was put back down on his back with a stiff clothesline. Lesnar continued to chop Cena down as eventually landed a belly to belly suplex. The action spilled into the corner of the ring as Cena cracked Lesnar with several forearms for good measure. Lesnar shook them off and punched Cena back into a weakened state. Lesnar tried to throw Cena back into the ring corner but Cena finally broke Lesnar down with more forearm shots. Lesnar got his nose busted open, which angered him and led to Cena catching another German Suplex. Lesnar followed that big suplex up with more shoulder thrusts to Cena’s abdomen. Lesnar took off his gloves, picked Cena up by his legs and ran him right into the ring corner again. As Lesnar went for a follow up shoulder thrust, Cena shocked the crowd and Lesnar with a 2nd Attitude Adjustment. Lesnar kicked out at two this time. Lesnar looked to land an F5 but Cena fell off his shoulders and then locked in his STF submission hold. Lesnar looked as if he was about to tap, but he soon locked in his Kimura on Cena. Cena amazed the crowd by picking up Lesnar with still locked on him, which then led to Cena getting him off with a 3rd Attitude Adjustment. Cena then looked for a finish as he locked in his STF on Lesnar…BU SUDDENLY, ROLLINS RAN IN TO CASH IN! Rollins kicked Cena out of the ring and gave up his Money in the Bank briefcase. He landed his Curb Stomp on Lesnar and looked for the final pin, but Cena stopped his attempt. The match continued to break down, which led to Lesnar finishing Cena off with an F5. The match was thrown out as Lesnar held up his WWE World Heavyweight Championship. Rollins’ cash-in attempt never became official…

Chris Jericho vs. Randy Orton!


Best Non-Match Moments/Highlights

• Christian made his onscreen return for a special pre-PPV Peep Show presentation. His guest – Chris Jericho. Y2J arrived with a new shirt and a great appreciation for the live Nashville, Tennessee crowd. Both men had a funny exchange as they spoke about their days as a tag team (Vitamin C was and still is an awesome name, by the way). After all the back and forth banter between both men, Jericho hyped up his upcoming bout with Randy Orton. Orton made an onscreen appearance and ripped both men (he was actually pretty funny). Jericho made sure to tell Orton that he’s ready to take him down tonight.

• Ziggler and his stunt double in R Truth bragged about how they were going to prevail over Miz and Sandow tonight. R Truth – “Shizzow Izoff!”

• Big Show got his boy Mark Henry excited for his big patriotic bout with Rusev. Mark Henry was gifted with a new pair of tights emblazoned with the stars and stripes of the U.S.A.

• The Florida Georgia Line came out to handle some commentary. They’ll be performing at WWE’s next Tribute to the Troops show.

• Brie Bella spoke about looking to see her twin Nikki lose her Divas championship bout tonight.
