Because several actors and actresses feel there has been a lack of diversity in the nominees, this year, some of them are boycotting the event. Spike Lee, Will Smith, and Jada Pinkett-Smith are just a few of those who will not be attending the show. Academy President Cheryl Boone Isaacs released the following statement to Deadline after the response to the nominations began to spread:

Of course I am disappointed, but this is not to take away the greatness (of the films nominated). This has been a great year in film…However, we are not stopping…We are moving forward and will continue to move forward with conversation and action. That needs to happen not just within the Academy, but the entire motion picture industry.

Since then, the Academy has also stated that actions are being implemented to diversify the areas of “gender, race, ethnicity and sexual orientation” in film.
