The choice to crown Hawkes was a relief to many Americans after the Miss America scandal that occurred the previous year. In 1984, Vanessa Williams was named Miss America. Ten months into her reign, however, she received an anonymous phone call that nude photos of her would be published in an edition of Penthouse. The nude photos came from two years prior, when she was working as an assistant and makeup artist for a New York photographer. According to Williams, her boss wanted photos of two models posing nude for silhouettes-- she agreed to pose for the pictures, but was told she'd be unidentifiable and the photos would never leave the studio.
