How The Grinch Stole Christmas! first aired on December 18, 1966 on CBS, nine years after Dr. Seuss book was first published in 1957. The half-hour special features the voice of Boris Karloff, the actor famed for playing Frankenstein’s Monster in the 1931 Frankenstein. It was produced by the great animator Chuck Jones, giving the animation its distinct look. Seuss, whose real name was Theodor Seuss Geisel, was also involved as co-producer.
For those who have never seen The Grinch, it will be a special treat because NBC is airing it in its complete, 26-minute form to celebrate its 50th anniversary. It’s the first time they’ve aired it unedited in over a decade.
After How The Grinch Stole Christmas!, NBC will air How Murray Saved Christmas, an animated special with the voices of Jerry Stiller, Jason Alexander and Sean Hayes.
