Game of Thrones: Can Daenerys Get Pregnant? [Prophecy Revisited]

HBO

There was a lot of talk about Daenerys being barren and unable to get pregnant on Game of Thrones tonight. But is that really true? Some fans think that prophecies may actually indicate it could still happen.

Minor spoilers through Season 7 Episode 6.

So many people were talking about Dany’s ability to have kids, it really seemed like they were giving us some major foreshadowing. Tyrion talked to Dany about her plan for succession, Dany talked about how her dragons are her children, and even Jorah talked to Jon about his future kids.

It was really hammered home tonight.

Which likely means there’s something more than meets the eye.

Mirri Maz Durr, after poisoning Drogo, told Dany that she would never be able to have children. Her words to Dany were:

“When the sun rises in the west and sets in the east, when the seas go dry and mountains blow in the wind like leaves, when your womb quickens again, and you bear a living child. Then [Khal Drogo] will return, and not before.”

But it’s possible that the witch wasn’t being honest with Dany. Yes, Dany has slept with Daario and not gotten pregnant. But it’s possible Daario was the one who was barren, not Dany.

Some fans think that it wasn’t even a prophecy at all, just a convoluted way of telling Dany that there was no way Drogo was ever going to be healed or come back to her.

There’s also the idea of a death paying for a life. If that’s the case again for Dany having a child, then the ending of Episode 6 could certainly open the door for her to have a kid.

The only problem with Dany getting pregnant is another theory that’s circulating. If she did, could she die in childbirth? We know that her mom died giving birth to her. And Jon’s mom died giving birth to him. So the odds might not be in her favor so much.

In summary, we don’t know for certain that Dany can’t get pregnant. All we have as proof is the “prophecy,” which might have been misinterpreted. It’s also possible that a death will pay for a life, and now she’s free to have a child again.

It’s been established that Jon comes from the same bloodline as Daenerys. Perhaps that’s the key. Drogon sensed the blood of his mother in Jon. Targareyn tribe is inbred.
