Jason Miller: We Know What We’re Doing To Ourselves

Jason "Mayhem" Miller

“Mayhem” says MMA fighters know what they are getting into

The sport of mixed martial arts is not kind to its participants.

The injuries have been seen before; the broken hands, mutilated arms, and head trauma have been witnessed by nearly every fan of the sport. But from broken ribs to broken limbs, the show must go on, no matter the amount of surgeries or the price they may cost.

Yet regardless of the punishment fighters put themselves through, along with the price they must pay for said punishment, certain competitors say that they know exactly what they got themselves into when they signed up for the job. Well, at least Strikeforce middleweight contender Jason “Mayhem” Miller does.

“Athletes know this stuff. We do,” Miller told MMAFighting.com’s Ben Fowlkes earlier this week. “We’re not dumb. It’s like that research that links head injuries to Lou Gehrig’s disease. Well, duh, science. Thanks for telling us what athletes already know.”

“We know what we’re doing to ourselves,” the man nicknamed “Mayhem” continued. “It’s the elephant in the room. We’re giving our bodies for the entertainment of the masses. I’m okay with that. I’ve had plenty of surgeries. I know there’s a chance that I could be retarded. I know that.”

The sport of mixed martial arts can be brutal to those who dare step in the cage. Like Miller, many have suffered injuries throughout their career and had surgeries to repair those injuries. It certainly is not a kind occupation, and certain athletes such as Miller seem to completely understand what an MMA career can cost.
