New On Netflix: The Resident

Did Hilary Swank lose a bet? The two-time Oscar winner certainly isn’t immune to appearing in total clunkers (The Reaping, P.S. I Love You), but The Resident is bottom-of-the-barrel direct-to-DVD B-movie trash to the point where her presence is constantly befuddling. It’s a shame, too, as this flick marks the resurrection of the long-dormant Hammer Films, the production company that cranked a lot of cheapo horror movies to great effect back in the ’60s and ’70s. Hammer veteran Christopher Lee was conned to play a supporting role in this derivative thriller (call it “Panic Room with Hilary Swank” for starters) about a single New York career woman who moves into a dream apartment and is promptly stalked and spied on by her creepo landlord (Jeffery Dean Morgan). Hilary looks great (she even does an obligatory bathtub scene, albeit through a foggy lens), but otherwise this is pretty disappointing stuff across the board — this is also one of those movies that has about six different endings, ’cause a dude this sick in the head apparently can’t be put out of commission on just the first few tries.

For some reason, two-time Oscar winner Hilary Swank stars in this lame direct-to-DVD thriller about the dangers of having Jeffrey Dean Morgan as your landlord.
