Peter Gabriel is a well-respected musician, artist, and performer who was the lead singer in 70s prog giants Genesis before carving a name for himself as a solo artist. He has released multiple superb records including his self-titled records, So, Us, and Up.
In 2016, Gabriel went on tour with his good friend Sting and released two new songs, his first original material in 3 years. He hasn’t released an album’s worth of new material since 2002, which begs the question, where is Peter Gabriel?
1. Has He Been Working on New Music?
Peter Gabriel hasn’t put out a new album of new material since 2002’s superb UP. However, he did release the cover’s records 2010’s Scratch My Back, and 2013’s And I’ll Scratch Yours and the revisiting of older Gabriel cuts 2011’s New Blood. Gabriel is notorious for taking his time between solo records, but they always pan out when released.
Gabriel recently teased new music in 2014 with the release of the song “Why Don’t You Show Yourself”, and then another single “I’m Amazing” in 2016. He also released music from the Oliver Stone directed movie Snowden with the single “The Veil.”
2. Will He Ever Perform as a Member of Genesis Again?
Gabriel spent most of the summer of 2016 touring with Sting on the Rock, Paper, Scissors Tour. On opening night, the band began serenading the crowd with the Genesis classic “Dancing With the Moonlit Knight,” but midway through they kicked into The Police’s “Message in a Bottle.” with Gabriel watching from stage left.
Gabriel hasn’t performed any songs from his old band since 1983 when he performed “I Know What I Like (In Your Wardrobe) with Steve Hackett.
It is well-known that Peter Gabriel stays close with his mates in Genesis even having Phil Collins as his best man at his wedding in 2004. But he refuses to reunite with them on stage, and did not show up to the band’s 2010 induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
3. What’s Going on With His Record Label Real World Records?
Gabriel founded Real World Records in the 90’s after the success of the WOMAD festivals and his ongoing exploration and discovery of world music.
Artists on Real World Records include Charlie Winston, Joseph Arthur, The Blind Boys of Alabama, and the Guo Brothers.
4. Will He Tour Again in the Near Future?
Gabriel and Sting went out last summer on a North American tour entitled the Rock, Paper, Scissors Tour.
The friends first toured together in 1986 with Amnesty International in the US with a World tour in 1988.
The two musicians play Sting, Police, and Peter Gabriel songs, mixing it up with new sounds for their most memorable songs.
Gabriel has no plans for a tour any time soon, but he has been teasing new music, so there is always hope.
