Saints linebacker Junior Galette, 26, was arrested Monday and is in custody after an alleged domestic violence incident. This is yet another to add to the string of arrests like this that have plagued the NFL this season.
Here’s what you need to know:
1. The Charges Were For Alleged Domestic Abuse
Bleacher Report has said that Galette was arrested on “reported allegations of domestic abuse.”
NOLA.com originally reported that he was in custody, and ESPN said the arrest came after a disturbance took place at his home.
2. Galette Joins a Growing List of NFL Players Accused of Domestic Violence
Galette is not the first NFL player to be arrested for domestic violence this season.
The most widely covered domestic violence-related arrest came earlier this season with Ray Rice. Multiple scandals arose from this, including the length of Rice’s suspension and who had seen the security footage of the abuse.
Rice’s case led to the NFL beefing up it’s support for domestic violence victims and changing how they handle such player arrests.
Shortly after this case, 49ers’ Ray McDonald was arrested for the same thing. McDonald’s arrest came just after Commissioner Roger Goodell announced harsher punishments for players arrested for domestic violence.
3. Galette Made Headlines Last Month
Last month, Galette made headlines when he said the Saints’ defense is better without Will Smith, Jonathan Vilma, Roman Harper and Malcolm Jenkins.
NOLA.com reported that Galette said the former Saints had been replaced by better players. Obviously, Smith and Vilma took offense to the claim and turned to twitter to defend themselves.
4. Galette Was Named Defensive Captain This Season
Galette was named one of the team’s defensive captains this season and finished the year with ten sacks. He had a clause in his contract that would have given him a bonus for recording 12 this season.
Galette, a graduate of Stillman College, signed with the Saints in 2010 as an undrafted free agent. The linebacker is originally from Haiti.
5. The Saints Did Not Make the Playoffs This Year
The Saints were eliminated from playoff contention after their Week 16 loss. They finished with a 7-9 record.
