Brandon Browner in Super Bowl XLIX: 5 Fast Facts You Need to Know

There’s only one way to sum up Brandon Browner’s NFL career: second chances. Browner’s journey to NFL success was plagued by suspensions, injuries and demotions, but on February 1 he will play in the Super Bowl with the New England Patriots, making up for the missed opportunity he experienced in 2014 with the Seattle Seahawks.

Here’s everything you need to know about the Patriots cornerback:


1. Browner Played College Ball at Oregon State

Browner played in the Pac-10 conference with Oregon State for two collegiate seasons. During his tenure he received many honors, including the Football Writers’ Association All-America Freshman team, Pac-10 Conference Freshman of the Year, and made the All-Pac-10 team his sophomore year.


2. Browner Went Undrafted in 2005

Browner was signed by the Denver Broncos as an undrafted free agent in 2005. He would experience turbulence his first year in the NFL as he fractured his forearm in the preseason against the San Francisco 49ers. He missed the entire 2005 season and the Broncos waived him in the off-season.


3. Browner Played in the Canadian Football League

Following his failure in the NFL, Browner decided his football career was not finished. He signed with the Calgary Stampeders of the Canadian Football League. He spent four years with the team and the Stampeders won the 2008 Grey Cup, the equivalent of the Super Bowl in the CFL.


4. He Holds 2 Seahawks Franchise Records

Due to his success in the Canadian Football League, The Seattle Seahawks signed Browner in 2011. Browner’s return to the NFL was met with success. In 2011, he set two Seahawks franchise records: longest interception return for a touchdown, when he returned a 94-yard interception against the New York Giants; and most interception yards returned with 220. Browner was a reserve for the Pro Bowl team and made the start replacing Carlos Rogers.


5. He was Suspended for Marijuana Use

Browner’s success with the Seahawks lasted until 2013-2014 season. The NFL suspended him indefinitely in Dec. 2013 when he tested positive for marijuana. Browner was reinstated by the NFL in March 2014. The terms of the reinstatement stated that Browner would be suspended the first four games of the 2014 season. Browner signed with the Patriots shortly afterward.
